I think I know why I didn’t like jazz and why it puts me on edge.
When I hear music, I “see” it as printed music in my head at the same time — the measures, notes (of course), time signature, etc. If there’s a structure to jazz I’m not able to see it; I wouldn’t be able to write it down in dictation. It frustrates me, I guess.
I do understand that.
I was curious, since you were a music major, are you a Delta Omicron sister, too?
Well, ya, your well trained. However music is inspirational if it comes from the soul, whether classic, jazz, blues, country, whatever. I used belong to a group of Christians who would gather and do spontaneous prayer and praise. No sheets, just a rhythm with various instruments, and maybe some singing and harmonizing with whatever they felt in their heart, would go on for a very long time, very sweet and moving. It wasn’t flaky, it was scriptural uplifting and enjoyable.
