Popular Fast Food Restaurant Closing Stores In Several States [Shake Shack]
iHeart Daily News Update ^ | August 29, 2024 | Jason Hall

Posted on 08/29/2024 1:36:56 PM PDT by SharpRightTurn

Shake Shack plans to close multiple "underperforming" restaurants in several U.S. states, according to a document filed to the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission on Tuesday (August 27).

The popular chain plans to close nine stores located in California, Ohio and Texas, however, no other stores are expected to be affected and the plan won't impact expansion in the three states, according to the filing. All Shake Shack management affected by the closures will be offered positions at neighboring locations and hourly employees will be eligible for rehire.

Six of the nine Shake Shacks scheduled to close are in California and located in Oakland, Downtown Los Angeles, Culver City, Koreatown in Los Angeles, Silver Lake in Los Angeles and Westfield Topanga in Canoga Park, according to the San Francisco Chronicle. The other three closures are reported to be in Columbus, Ohio, and Houston, Texas.

The fast food chain does, however, still have more than 20 locations in the Los Angeles area, which includes California's first drive-thru location opened earlier this month, as well as nearly 330 locations in the U.S. and more than 400 globally. Shake Shack is the latest national brand to experience closures in the state of California and nationally, following Big Lots and Red Lobster's decisions to reduce their footprint.

Been a few times to meet friends/co-workers. It never appealed to me. Mediocre fare at high prices.

My thoughts also. Cannot eat fast food very often but my go-to now is always In-N-Out.

mean while plan on opening 80 new locations?

Good point. Shake Shack isn't like McDonald's, where it is odd for one to close without opening a newer one nearby.

If you go into a neighborhood, and you see a Boost Mobile, Cash America, Church's Fried Chicken and Family Dollar, you do not expect to see a Shake Shack. You see Shake Shack near Starbucks, Lululemon, Land Rover/Volvo, Ferragamo, Brooks Brothers.

When the latter neighborhood becomes the former, the Shake Shacks etc. go away, and are replaced first by tweeners (Walgreens, Jack-In-the-Box, Dunkin Donuts, Ross Stores) then if unabated come the Church's, Cricket Wireless, Tattoo-4-You, etc. Shake Shack is not going to wait for the bitter end. It doesn't reflect on them.

The chain has chosen to commit suicide by DEI.
How poetic.

I went once when the one in Dallas opened. First thing I saw was a rainbow pride shake. Around that time, they were gushing about Obama visiting one in DC or somewhere. I never even considered going back.

The two Shake Shacks that are closing in Houston are at the Galleria Mall and in the Montrose area of Westheimer.

Not surprised about the California failures which are a majority of the announced closings. SS is the red headed stepchild of In & Out. Stupid to take them on in their home State. I had their grub, granted 14 years ago, in Indiana. It was above average yet well below I&O.

I felt the same for Five Guys. I’d rather have Dairy Queen or Whataburger.

I went to 5 Guys about 6 months ago.

Damn near $20 for a small cheeseburger, fries and a drink.

Never again.

It’s funny how in California they compared Shake Shack to In-n-Out. I’ve only been to one Shake Shack, in West LA, but it was a completely different thing than In-n-Out. It was nicer than a normal fast food place, had a much bigger menu than In-n-Out and it didn’t have a drive thru. I wouldn’t have thought they were competitors.
