Shake Shack plans to close multiple "underperforming" restaurants in several U.S. states, according to a document filed to the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission on Tuesday (August 27).
The popular chain plans to close nine stores located in California, Ohio and Texas, however, no other stores are expected to be affected and the plan won't impact expansion in the three states, according to the filing. All Shake Shack management affected by the closures will be offered positions at neighboring locations and hourly employees will be eligible for rehire.
Six of the nine Shake Shacks scheduled to close are in California and located in Oakland, Downtown Los Angeles, Culver City, Koreatown in Los Angeles, Silver Lake in Los Angeles and Westfield Topanga in Canoga Park, according to the San Francisco Chronicle. The other three closures are reported to be in Columbus, Ohio, and Houston, Texas.
The fast food chain does, however, still have more than 20 locations in the Los Angeles area, which includes California's first drive-thru location opened earlier this month, as well as nearly 330 locations in the U.S. and more than 400 globally. Shake Shack is the latest national brand to experience closures in the state of California and nationally, following Big Lots and Red Lobster's decisions to reduce their footprint.
Never ate there. I don’t eat “fast-food”. Just wanted to see what yous guys had to say.
Been a few times to meet friends/co-workers. It never appealed to me. Mediocre fare at high prices.
Absolutely
My wife and I had lunch at shake shack in Brookfield wisconsin. $30.00 , ridiculous.
My thoughts also. Cannot eat fast food very often but my go-to now is always In-N-Out.
They serve only gristle-burgers in the one nearest us...
Shake Shack promises that by 2025, their leadership will be 50% Black

DIE DEI!
The chain has chosen to commit suicide by DEI.
How poetic.
Over priced, small servings Kuhrapp
And every whypeepo order gets extra spit cuz “racism and reparations”
I went once when the one in Dallas opened. First thing I saw was a rainbow pride shake. Around that time, they were gushing about Obama visiting one in DC or somewhere. I never even considered going back.
I don’t know how they are still in business, went once with my wife, never again.

Not surprised about the California failures which are a majority of the announced closings. SS is the red headed stepchild of In & Out. Stupid to take them on in their home State. I had their grub, granted 14 years ago, in Indiana. It was above average yet well below I&O.
I felt the same for Five Guys. I’d rather have Dairy Queen or Whataburger.
I went to 5 Guys about 6 months ago.
Damn near $20 for a small cheeseburger, fries and a drink.
Never again.
It’s funny how in California they compared Shake Shack to In-n-Out. I’ve only been to one Shake Shack, in West LA, but it was a completely different thing than In-n-Out. It was nicer than a normal fast food place, had a much bigger menu than In-n-Out and it didn’t have a drive thru. I wouldn’t have thought they were competitors.
“That goes for “Five Guys” burger joint, too. At there ONCE and never again.”
ditto ... and DON’T get me started on Five Guys ...
