Russian troops advanced into the village of Novohrodivka in eastern Ukraine on Wednesday. That puts them within five miles of Pokrovsk, a main objective of Russia’s nearly yearlong eastern offensive.
The Ukrainian military doesn’t have many extra troops to deploy to the Pokrovsk front. Many of the spare brigades it had a month ago are now participating in Ukraine’s surprise invasion of Russia’s Kursk Oblast.
Ukrainian leaders are finally beginning to grasp the urgency of the balance of forces on the Pokrovsk axis. “The situation is extremely difficult,” Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky conceded on Wednesday.

Resembles the Battle of the Bulge ….. imho
Remember Germany’s last gasp attack in the battle of the Bulge in WWII essentially made it easier to destroy Germany’s last remaining forces in the West.
It’s that plus more, think of Russians seeing German Armor rolling up in the Kursk Region, the site of the largest armored battle in history in 1943.
I’m sure anyone who wasn’t alive in 1943 to remember the Battle of Kursk was taught the history of Russian involvement in WW II and 80 plus years later seeing German Equipment once again holding ground in Kursk is not lost on the citizens.

It is surprising in this day and age it is still difficult to get current (and accurate) information about the conflict in Ukraine. I will be the first to acknowledge I am not an expert on what is going on and I doubt David Axe is either.
What I do know is that this is not a war of how much land your army occupies, but a war of attrition. Wars are very expensive both from a human and financial equation.
Even if Russia “wins” the war it will be a Pyrrhic Victory. It has been reported that they have already lost hundreds of thousands of men and billions of dollars in equipment.
Russia had a good thing going with them selling oil and gas to the Europeans, he has put that in jeopardy.
The Russian economy is also taking a big hit right now with inflation out of control and the government sucking money out of the economy to pay for replacement of the equipment they have lost (money going to North Korea and China not back into the Russian economy).
Perhaps a biggest loss for Russia is the exposure it is NOT a superpower. Close to three years in and they barely gained a foot hold into a country they share a border with and has a smaller military (and no Navy) then they do. Russian military are poorly trained, and poorly lead, their equipment is bad and their logistics are almost non-existent and is corrupt almost beyond repair.
What chance would Russia have against the combined forces of NATO? I will tell you none.
With Ukraine’s invasion into Russian territory it changed the perception of the war for the people of Russia. They (the people) are now at risk from the war and from the reports I have seen they are not happy with Putin.
Like most dictators they do not retire voluntarily, they are taken out. I would not be surprised if Putin is not retired in this way.
So even if they eventually win, they lose.
This war never should have happen.
It moire closely resembles the Hamas invasion of Israel on October 7.
The goals seem to have been to capture the Russian power plant near Kursk to use as a bargaining chip to give the Ukraine more leverage for cease fire negotiations.
This objective has failed so now Ukraine seems to be digging it's troops in on Russian territory and destroying critical bridges so the Ukrainian troops in Russia have no lines of retreat and have no option but to stay and fight
This is probably not going to a. winning strategy.
Every news site tells a different story.
True, the Russian people may get sick of Putin and the war in Ukraine and rise up, they won’t feel the same way about the war in the Kursk Region, their people have been taught WW II history about things like the Battle of Kursk and Stalingrad.
Except I dont think it was a diversion, at least not primarily.
Here on FR, “Pyrrhic Victory” means victories I don’t like and wish didn’t happen.

“Pyrrhic Victory is usually followed by the downfall of the victor.”
Interesting. I’ve understood pyrrhic victory, but never considered that the logical end is the victor’s downfall. Hmmm...
It’s failed, it’s winning, Russia has failed, Russia is winning, Ukraine has failed, Ukraine is winning.
F’ Russia and F’ Ukraine. I’ll care only after America is fixed, borders are secured, illegals deported or eliminated through mass extinction and liberals and the LGBTQRSTUVWXYZ crowd have been decimated and crawled back in the closet and locked the doors.

This WIKI article list examples of one side winning the battle but in the end it cost more then they won.

Thanks. I guess I did understand it, but only considered it on a smaller, usually personal, scale. (You win what you think you want, but what results bites you in the butt.) These are “big picture” examples, for sure.

Bull shit.....pure unadulterated bull shit
Were the Russians forced to flee Ukraine and leave billions in military hardware behind?
