PARIS/MOSCOW, Aug 25 (Reuters) - Pavel Durov, the Russian-born billionaire founder and owner of the Telegram messaging app, was arrested at Le Bourget airport outside Paris shortly after landing on a private jet late on Saturday and placed in custody, three sources told Reuters. The arrest of the 39-year-old technology billionaire prompted on Sunday a warning from Moscow to Paris that he should be accorded his rights and criticism from X owner Elon Musk who said that free speech in Europe was under attack. There was no official confirmation from France of the arrest, but two French police sources and one Russian source who spoke on condition of anonymity said that Durov was arrested shortly after arriving at Le Bourget airport on a private jet from Azerbaijan. One of the two French police sources said that ahead of the jet's arrival police had spotted he was on the passenger list and moved to arrest him because he was the subject of an arrest warrant in France. Durov, who has dual French and United Arab Emirates citizenship, was arrested as part of a preliminary police investigation into allegedly allowing a wide range of crimes due to a lack of moderators on Telegram and a lack of cooperation with police, a third French police source said.

One of the investigators told AFP they were surprised Durov entered France despite the warrant against him, adding “enough of Telegram’s impunity”.

I read that the warrant was issued while he was in the air, and moments before he landed.

If that's true, this "investigator" is a lying POS.

Plenty of people in the Covid or Climate discussions said deniers should be imprisoned - or worse.

I reviewed a number (>15) stories and did not find that mentioned. I did find:
The fact that Durov flew from Baku to Paris in his private plane, knowing that the French had a longstanding warrant out for his arrest, is one of the unanswered mysteries of this story.

There actually is a UN Bill of Rights but it gets ignored by the elites. I did put it to good use a couple times a few years ago, first to pressure Laos to release a team of volunteers for an organization I was overseeing after they were arrested for giving out Bibles and such. And then again after local authorities in Laos continued holding a pastors’ daughter after higher authorities cleared her of murder charges (she was fending off a former employer who was trying to rape her) to pressure her father (who had already been evicted from his home and village for his pastoral ministry.

Strangly searching on those words brings you to an article that states the oppoosite.

French authorities on Saturday detained Pavel Durov, the French-Russian billionaire who founded the messaging app Telegram, at an airport outside Paris, according to CNN affiliate BFMTV.

Officers from France’s anti-fraud office, attached to French customs, took him into custody after he arrived at Bourget Airport on a private jet from Azerbaijan, BFMTV reported.

According to BFMTV, the Telegram founder — often referred to as the “Mark Zuckerberg of Russia” — had not regularly traveled to France and Europe since the arrest warrant was issued.

Durov, 39, was wanted under a French arrest warrant due to the lack of moderation on Telegram which led to it being used for money laundering, drug trafficking and sharing pedophilic content, according to BFMTV.

I looked at many of the articles, and it seems to be unclear what happened, when.

The timeline makes a big difference. I can’t see someone that smart flying into a jurisdiction where there was an existing arrest warrant out for him.

He has people to look out for his interests in this area, no doubt.

I sure hope so. It seems unwise to think you can fly in and remain under the radar. Downside risk makes it a fool’s game. I hope that he is able to get freed.

Agreed.

It's a good heads-up to wealthy people who might cross the wrong people politically.

Create your own black-ops team, wealthy people! And stay clear of these types of jurisdictions.

This threatens more than Americans. This site lets pro democracy activists in third world dictatorships to bypass their country from spying on them

It is the site’s encryption that made it popular among the criminal class.

His and his brother’s previous site In Contact/ was used by nazis and neonazis the same way. But, that may have been after Putin’s cronies took it over. Or maybe is why Putin took it over. Not sure yet, but it is interesting that Putin is now running to the guy’s defense after the 2014 stories of him being pushed off his site by Putin.

May be so but i do not agree that having a site where anything can be communicated requires tha police etc must be accommodated.

What is missing from the story is that Telegram is not a social media site with public audiences subject to censorship.

Telegram is a person to person style communications application, similar to text messaging, used by many people for its security and the EU wants to read all messages.
