PARIS/MOSCOW, Aug 25 (Reuters) - Pavel Durov, the Russian-born billionaire founder and owner of the Telegram messaging app, was arrested at Le Bourget airport outside Paris shortly after landing on a private jet late on Saturday and placed in custody, three sources told Reuters. The arrest of the 39-year-old technology billionaire prompted on Sunday a warning from Moscow to Paris that he should be accorded his rights and criticism from X owner Elon Musk who said that free speech in Europe was under attack. There was no official confirmation from France of the arrest, but two French police sources and one Russian source who spoke on condition of anonymity said that Durov was arrested shortly after arriving at Le Bourget airport on a private jet from Azerbaijan. One of the two French police sources said that ahead of the jet's arrival police had spotted he was on the passenger list and moved to arrest him because he was the subject of an arrest warrant in France. Durov, who has dual French and United Arab Emirates citizenship, was arrested as part of a preliminary police investigation into allegedly allowing a wide range of crimes due to a lack of moderators on Telegram and a lack of cooperation with police, a third French police source said.

Free speech is under attack in the once-free West. Leaders here at FR - be careful where you travel, seriously.

“Elon Musk better stay out of France.”

I can’t see any reason why a sane person would travel to that cesspool. It literally is a cesspool.

Personally I wish they’d print a thing or two of what it is he actually printed they’ve such an objection to. It’s hard to see what this is really about without that.

Remember that EO Obama signed that essentially allowed Interpol to police US citizens on US soil?

Wouldn’t help the police? Let them do their leg work. Yup, conservatives are well advised to be careful.

If I understand it is nothing he printed. It was the refusal to allow the police/authorities a back door to identify the posters. The app is accused of failure to cooperate with law enforcement over drug trafficking, child sexual content and fraud.

TF1 TV and BFM TV, both quoting unidentified sources, said the investigation was focused on a lack of moderators and that police considered that this situation allowed criminal activity to go on undeterred on the messaging app.

One of the investigators told AFP they were surprised Durov entered France despite the warrant against him, adding “enough of Telegram’s impunity”.

Meanwhile, the Russian embassy in France has demanded consular access to Durov and demanded that his rights be ensured, Russian state news agency TASS reported on Sunday.

The embassy said France has so far “avoided engagement” on the situation with Durov. Russian diplomats are in contact with Durov’s lawyer, the embassy said.

Exactly, Beowulf9. I suspect that whatever it is will seem innocuous to most of us once it is seen.

The entire world needs a “Bill of Rights.” Europe is not free precisely because the various governments are crossing the line protecting citizens from tyranny.

Which is just an excuse too...their real problem is they’ve lost control of the narrative because people can freely communicate, either point to point or in groups, where the government can’t control the narrative or even know what is being said.

It’s the online version of “let’s chat in private” that is being criminalized.
