Senator Calls U.S. Support for Saudis a “National Disgrace” After Intercept Reveals Unpaid Debt to Pentagon

Saudi Arabia won’t pay the U.S. back for fueling its warplanes as it bombed Yemen, but the U.S. recently resumed weapons sales to the kingdom.

Last week, an investigation by The Intercept revealed that the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has repeatedly stiffed the Defense Department on a bill for support of a Saudi-led war in Yemen that killed hundreds of thousands of people and sparked a humanitarian catastrophe. For months — up to and since publication — the Pentagon has ducked The Intercept’s requests for comment on the unpaid bill.

Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., in a statement to The Intercept, excoriated the kingdom, its leader Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, and the Pentagon in response to the findings.

“Yemen’s children will grow up knowing Saudi Arabia’s brutal war that caused so much slaughter and starvation was made possible with American support. Now, the billionaire crown prince apparently will not reimburse America’s taxpayers for refueling his warplanes,” Paul told The Intercept.

“Saudi Arabia’s delinquency, and our government’s arrogant lack of transparency, further demonstrates that America’s servility to this autocratic regime is a national disgrace.”

I guess they figure if Ukraine gets free stuff from the USA, why not them? Actually,
we get more bang for the buck helping Saudi Arabia than helping the corrupt Ukraine.

Well the United States decided to invade Yemen. Obama did it and no president since then has undone it.

Nobody with common sense and a rudimentary understanding of the world is surprised at this lack of respect.

DC is so inept that they cannot get a few loads of fuel for aircraft, from the Saudis, to do things on BEHALF of the Saudis.

Embarrassing.

A few aircraft refuelings from the Saudis is like getting a 5 gallon bucket of wheat from a Kansas farmer.
Complete lack of respect. Especially considering that we were doing the bombing FOR them and their war.

I Think the Saudis are doing it on behalf of the US and that’s why they expect not to have to pay for the fuel whereas the people in the US don’t want a money trail to be seen as paying for a secret war.

Rand Paul is a foreign policy idiot, unfortunately. The war in Yemen was caused by Iran and he knows it.

They werent bombing Yemen, as a country. Nobody was blasting Aden, the city, into rubble. The fight has been with a guerilla force, the Houthis, in the mountains of northern Yemen.

Technically but there is carpet bombing and wanton destruction/collateral damage

I think the displaced and poor people (civilians) of Yemen might have something to say

If radical Islam is the enemy, then the U.S. was on the wrong side in the FIRST Gulf War.
