It’s a church...and doesn’t belong closed.
Well, Orthodoxy POLITICALLY behaves a bit different than western churches.
Dogmatically all are the same, but one of Eastern Orthodoxy’s banes is what we non-Orthodox call “Caesaropapism” meaning too tightly tied to nationalist sentiments.
This is what led to the Bulgarians rebelling against the Greek Phanariots who were controlling them under the Ottomans (the Ottomans made “millets” where each religious group was controlled by its religious leaders — and the Bulgarians were controlled by Greeks).
This is also the case here, where the allegiance of the 4% of the population who adhere to the Orthodox Church - Moscow patriarchate is to Patriarch Kirill of Moscow, who has publicly blessed the invasion of Ukraine.
The Moscowite Patriarch has blessed the Muscowite tanks and missiles attacking Ukraine.
If say, during WWII a buddhist group in the USA held that the Japanese emperor was God, what do you think the USA should have done for that Buddhist group?
As to this particular move by the Ukrainian parliament, I don’t support it as I see it as more symbolic than really stopping traitors - and it sets up bad press when the Ukrainians should be focused on other things.
That doesn’t make Muscowy or the Muscowite patriarch any less bad, note - Patriarch Kirill is too closely tied to the Kremlin
KGB dudes claiming to be a church doesn’t really make them a church. Down the closet, that’s where they belong.
