A 20-year-old college student from Bartlesville is back in the United States after her family says she got sick and started having seizures while vacationing at a resort in Cancun, Mexico.
Her family says they’ve paid more than $60,000, between getting her home and for her treatments in Mexico and the U.S.
Zara Hull was only in Mexico for a full day before she says she’d been drinking by the pool, then had a glass of water, and immediately passed out.
She woke up in a hospital and her family says doctors demanded $10,000 before they would even treat her and kept asking for thousands more to keep her alive.
Hull is a college student at Oklahoma Christian University who went to Cancun Thursday with her boyfriend and four other friends.
After she passed out, she started having seizures and was sent to a hospital in Cancun, where her mother says Hull was heavily sedated and intubated.
"It's so scary because, there's times, like am I going to make it out of this?” said Hull. “I've asked, am I going to make it out of this, am I going to die? What's going to happen? Because I don't know."
Rilee Works, Hull’s mother, says the hospital requested $10,000, and then later requested $17,000 more to continue treatment or $7,000 grand to release Hull, without even removing her tubes.
"When I got to America, my mom had them check my body for any incisions to make sure I had all my organs,” said Hull. “If they didn't pay the money, I was going to be out on the street, dead. That was going to be the end of the story."
Her parents paid nearly $30,000 to fly her back to the States by medical evac.
Now, Hull is at a hospital in Dallas.
Doctors there haven’t figured out what happened or what could have caused the seizures.
"We don't have a lot of answers, we don't know a lot, we don't know what she was given in the hospital down there, we don't know what she was given at the resort,” said Works.
Hull is still having seizures, but she is getting better each day
She and her family are thankful for all the support.
"I am beyond blessed that everyone is reaching out,” said Hull. “I do not care about the money. I care about the prayers, I care about everyone praying for me, the churches getting together and praying for me."
Hull says she hopes before other people go on vacation, that they will do their research about where they’re staying and how to get help if they need it.
There are several GoFundMe accounts to help Hull’s family with medical and evacuation expenses, you can find those HERE and HERE.
I have no idea why any US citizen thinks it’s a good idea to travel to Mexico right now. Stories like this have popped up for years.
Vacation in maesico? Even the mesicans wont stay there.
World class waves on the Pacific side for surfers perhaps?
It’s called Travel Insurance. Never leave the US without iT. This situation would have been the same if she’d gone to many countries.
There are probably safer places to chase surf, these days.
there is NOTHING worth yer life in mexco, nothing...
Drink Tequila...
Cancun is on the Gulf of Mexico, Cabo San Lucas is on the end of the Baja Peninsula Pacific side.
well, in the beginning anyway...
It used to be a fine place, like the US in the 50’s.
Top 10 murder capitals in the world, 7 are in Mexico.
And the Joe/SCAMala regime has rolled out the red carpet from Mexico to the USA. No need for a passport, no need for a visa, just come right on in all you gang members, rapists, killers.
Insurance companies approve medical payments based on reasonable and customary charges in the medical market where the service was delivered.
These charges were not R&C, they were flat out extortion. So even if she did have travel insurance, it would have only paid a fraction of the total bill.
I need some help with memory recall. Specifically, I’m struggling to recall all of the summer vacation trips abroad and domestic that I took when I was a 20 year old college student.
They say that time erases the bad memories and keeps only the good. This is where I need help. Trying to understand why all I can remember from summers as a college student were summer jobs that I needed to help pay for the academic year ahead. It sucks getting old.
When I visited Mexico some years ago, I ate only in the hotel dining room or the local Olive Garden.

Huh???? Mexico was a nasty, hell-hole in the 50s, a place of beggars and thieves, burglar bars and broken glass on the walls, tossing coins to the men on the sidewalk to watch your car while you entered a building, open bribery and the tiniest children already skilled hustlers and con people when not begging them selves or trying to sell their sister.
Starving dogs and I even saw a bar where the foot rest running the length of the bar was also a urinal so you could drink and pee while never leaving your place, I was in Mexico a few times as a kid in the 50s and spent time there in the 60s and 70s and it was nothing like America, in the 50s it was especially nasty.
Travel Insurance is specifically setup to deal with these situations, Ours cost about $780 per year, but you can purchase it per trip through air or cruise lines.
Ours includes
Medical evacuation from a country,
For medical procedures and hospitalizations there is a $500 deductible for medical issues.
It also covers travel issues related to travel issues if a flight is cancelled.
Thank you Captain Obvious. I’ve been a traveling surfer in my younger days and I’ve been to Mexico many times.
Why would you eat it an Olive Garden?
