California's most innovative pot companies are giving up on the legal market
SF Gate ^ | August 13, 2024 | By Lester Black

Kim Howard has spent the past six years trying to keep her cannabis cosmetics company alive in California’s legal marijuana market, selling her cannabis-infused eye creams and skin serums at dispensaries across the state. But late last year, she finally gave up. She returned her state marijuana license and pulled her Green Bee Botanicals products from the state’s dispensaries.

That’s because she’s joined a wave of California entrepreneurs who have pivoted to the hemp industry, turning their backs on California’s embattled marijuana market in favor of the federally legal version of cannabis called hemp. Howard said pivoting to hemp has meant lower taxes, cheaper regulations and the ability to sell in 30 states across the country instead of just in California.

“Rather than the thorny obstacles we’ve had to crawl through [in California’s marijuana industry], it’s like being in a regular market,” Howard told SFGATE. “Now we’re going to be able to have an e-commerce site online and sell to every state that allows CBD.”

The exodus is sending shock waves through the industry, bleeding an already troubled marijuana market of needed businesses — and the customers who would shop there. It’s also befuddling regulators, who are unsure of what to do as intoxicating hemp products are sold outside the protection of state regulations.

Weird huh? Not sure how it’s going here in Nevada but it seems the legal outfits are busy. Can’t drive down the interstate without smelling it either.

I can still hear those boneheads with the buckteeth sayin’, “Legalize it and tax the hell out of it.”

Regulations coming from the state in 3...2...1...

There is nothing in California the lefties won't regulate and tax.

College girlfriend opened an cannabis shop in Seattle when it went legal there. Closed within a year. Taxes, business fees, overhead, wages, bene’s, just no way she could come even close to competing with the street weed. Better quality and more selection, but that’s just a small slice of the market. Most of the market is hood rats and teen/20-something wanting a cheap buzz.

Total outsider here, looking in.

Completely and perpetually and forever personally uninvolved in any of this.

This whole marajuana/hemp/cannabis appears to be a clown show that no sane or earnestly moral individual should ever aspire to get involved in.

Change This Guy’s mind.

Dispensaries selling weed for 300/ounce. You can order it online for 50/oz. What do you think will and has happened?

Pot was supposed to solve all the state tax problems where ever it was legalized. Just magic money falling out of the sky.

That is a great education for her—worth a lot more than years in college.

Speaking as a child of the 60s, Cannabis should never have been legalized for recreational use. It is a snake in the grass and many who use it will eventually fall prey to its affects on their lives. Please don’t go down that road, just say no and teach your kids to do the same.

You’re exactly right

It’s everywhere wherever vape nicotine is sold

And liquor stores

Fancier packages the higher price

Folks I know who have tried it said it’s buzzy and sleepy but dissimilar

I don’t know any cannabis users from chronic to moderate who have switched from legit (yes I know) pot to these offshoots

And I know a lot of them

The pothole so to speak is the agriculture act that permits a dry weight percentage of delta 8/9/10 (delta nine being the hallucinogen that gives the buzz people find with street weed) and some chemists who have learned how to make a small amount drive it hyper concentrated and now you can buy it anywhere. Perfectly legal. No government taxes and regulations which drive the price.

The government had now proved it can’t run a brothel in north Nevada they seized and they can’t run a weed store. The government that can’t figure out how to seek sex and drugs doesn’t need to keeping taxing me at nearly 40%

Hi.

Even in the states that have legal marijuana, the Black market cuts into profits.

Lower price, higher quality and the dealers deliver.

"You can order it online for 50/oz. "

Where can a person find such prices? Asking for a friend.

By far. You do the deal, the cartel is done with you. With the government, they will SWAT you at 4:00AM and kill your dog in front of your kids. My cartel friends would never do that. That have ethics.
