The US Navy says it can't stop the Houthi attacks on shipping with force alone

The US Navy's counter-Houthi mission will not be enough on its own to stop the Iran-backed rebels from attacking vulnerable merchant ships, the admiral overseeing operations in the Middle East said this week.

Vice Adm. George Wikoff, the commander of US Naval Forces Central Command, said that it will take more than force and firepower to deal with the Houthis. Rather, Washington and its allies must come up with an alternative way to apply pressure on the group.

"The solution is not going to come at the end of a weapon system," Wikoff said Wednesday at an event hosted by the Center for Strategic and International Studies think tank. "It's going to be the international community."

For over eight months, US forces have been working to defend key shipping lanes in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden from relentless Houthi attacks. The rebels have been using one-way attack drones, naval drones, and anti-ship missiles to threaten commercial vessels and American warships deployed in the region.

The current incarnation of McNamara's 'Hearts and Minds' inanity.

They are transitioning from a 30-year Viet Nam type war to a 200-year war with the Moose Limbs.

Man the only good thing about this situation is that officers retire about 20 years earlier than executives in other fields.

Will make it easier for President Trump to clean house.

Thank Heaven that the POTUS is the CinC according to our Constitution.

First you lay waste the Houthi homeland. Once that is accomplished you level Sana’a. With that, the Yemenis can revert to their 13th century civilization that they have yet to fully escape.

“ What else you got in mind, Admiral ? ”

Maybe some midnight basketball? This is pitiful. The US Navy can’t stop a third world flotilla? They could if they wanted to. Of that I have no doubt.

Curtis LeMay once said (and I paraphrase badly) if you kill enough of them they eventually stop fighting.

Maybe the US Navy and DoD could hire some additional DEI Commissars to find the answer? Or, maybe Adm. Wickoff could emote the problem with the current DEI CNO (Adm. Lisa Franchetti) and they could jointly come up with a satisfactory "equity" solution such as "consult the international community"?

Pathetic.

Oh, they could stop it. What is lacking is the will to do what needs to be done.

The US Navy’s counter-Houthi mission will not be enough on its own to stop the Iran-backed rebels from attacking vulnerable merchant ships, the admiral overseeing operations in the Middle East said this week.Vice Adm. George Wikoff, the commander of US Naval Forces Central Command,

***********************************************************

As Europe faced the threat of Hitler and the Nazis—when much of the civilized world was at war—more than 350,000 Americans gathered on air bases across East Anglia, England. These heroic fighters—just teenagers and young adults—belonged to the Mighty Eighth Air Force. They came to join their English allies and take the fight to the skies.

Their story began in January 1942 on the other side of the Atlantic Ocean in Savannah, Georgia. There, the United States Army Air Corps assigned seven men, without a single aircraft, to a newly formed Eighth Air Force.

Over the course of the war, the Eighth Air Force became the largest air armada in the world, capable of sending more than 2,000 heavy bombers and over 1,000 fighter planes on a single mission. In less than three years, the Eighth accomplished its two-fold mission: 1) destroy the German Luftwaffe; and 2) cripple Nazi Germany’s war making capabilities. By doing so, the Mighty Eighth gave the allies air supremacy, paved the way for the D-Day invasion, and contributed significantly to the liberation of occupied Europe. By May 1945, the Eighth had flown more than 600,000 sorties and dropped over 670,000 tons of bombs.

The cost of ridding the Nazi scourge was staggering, 26,000 Eighth airmen were killed in action; another 28,000 became prisoners of war. Their valor was unparalleled. As the teenagers and young men of the Eighth battled the enemy at 25,000 feet, such bravery earned them 17 Medals of Honor, 220 Distinguished Service Crosses, and more than 420,000 Air Medals.

“The US Navy says it can’t stop the Houthi attacks on shipping with force alone”

and yet, at one time, the U.S. Navy was instrumental in destroying the Japanese Empire in WWII ...

and MEN, as in REAL MEN e.g. General Ira Eaker, CO 8th Air Force; General Jimmy Doolittle, CO 8th Air Force; General Dwight Eisenhower, Supreme Allied Commander; George Patton, Commander of the 8th Army; Admiral Chester Nimitz, Commander in Chief of the Pacific Ocean Areas; Admiral Bull Halsey, Fleet Admiral Pacific Forces; General Chesty Puller; USMC.

Just to name a few. sadly, I don’t see any MEN like those above in todays military.

Do you know a lot of General officers these days? We are not in a world war. Generals are not getting a lot of press, so if you are not deep into the Mil world they are unknown people.

I was one of many assistants to a Navy admiral. His desk was about 10’ down a hall from mine and we spoke several times a day. I knew well a Marine General for years and worked with him on some important projects.

With all due respect, I disagree with you that we are not in a World War. We are in a war and we, with our current political leadership, are losing it. Here are some recent examples of our Naval Officers press clippings in recent years:

June, 2017, a Captain Bryce Benson is in command of a warship that runs into a merchant marine ship. With 7 sailors DEAD, he is just relieved of command.

August, 2017, a Captain Jeffrey Bennett is in command of a warship that collides with another merchant ship. With 10 sailors dead, he is just relieved of command.

July 2020, a Captain Gregory Thoramon is in command of a warship tied to the dock that was completely destroyed at a minimum cost of 1.2 billion dollars. Thoramon was fined $5,000 and relieved of duty.

So, it is my opinion, that the Navy I served 7 years in is woefully mislead and I worry about the War we are in turning into an all out shooting war. Our DEI/WOKE officer corp looks pretty shitty to me.......just ask the Houthi’s.

There are 300 +/- ships in the Navy. You find four bad commanders from the past 10 years.

That means 99% of them are competent.
