US military rejects calls to reduce sonic booms from SpaceX rockets blasting along California coast

Military officials are rejecting demands from a state agency to better monitor and mitigate the effects of rocket launches and sonic booms from Vandenberg Space Force Base, frustrating local officials and increasing tensions between the U.S. Space Force and the state agency tasked with preserving the California coast.

SpaceX, a leading contractor with Space Force, wants to rapidly multiply the number of rockets launched from the military base in Santa Barbara County. The company hasn’t been seeking the commission’s approval, however; instead, Space Force officials have been negotiating with the California Coastal Commission for months over a plan to allow 36 launches at the base this year — six times more than the previous agreement allowed.

As part of those talks, the state commission asked Space Force to track and document more closely how the blasts affect wildlife and to consider ways to reduce the harm from sonic booms. The commission can’t impose its will on the military — it can only ask for Space Force to cooperate.

At the commission’s meeting Thursday, what is usually a mild-mannered monthly session turned tense after military officials rejected the additional monitoring and mitigation, and Space Force officials refused to take questions. Commission members were visibly irked.

“I’m beyond pissed,” said Commissioner Susan Lowenberg.

“I don’t understand why our own government is thumbing their nose at another branch of our government.” Said Commissioner Kristina Kunkel, “I hope this commission won’t be bullied into ignoring environmental protections.”

Sonic Booms were the sound of freedom in mid-century America. You don’t hear sonic booms much these days because there is much less freedom.

Somehow in elementary school we survived near-daily sonic booms from F-104 Starfighters and others. And I didn’t notice that all local flora and fauna went extinct.

We’re gonna roll some coal up and down the coast. There were thousands of peaceful fun loving dinosaurs killed so we could launch our rockets with 100% pure Methane and some oxygen to to keep the fire lit. Out of all the time there is, how long can a sonic boom last and how long must you continue to bitch about it?

Hard to tell what you’re trying to say ..

Yes, sonic booms do accompany the launches.

"Somehow in elementary school we survived near-daily sonic booms..."

Somehow in elementary school (back in 1942 & 1943) we survived near-daily explosions as either allied ships were torpedoed off of Boston Harbor, or depth charges were being rained down on suspected Nazi subs...

We elementary school students all sat quietly on our piece of cardboard in the coatrooms and recited either the Lords prayer or the Pledge of Allegiance...

In those days Americans did not complain and demand them to stop...

Ya would think the load roar and any toxic smoke from a launch would be more of an issue to them but I assume the commission has the authority over plane noises, sonic booms, rather than space craft .

Dear leftists… wildlife has survived hearing thunder all their lives. They’ll equally survive occasional sonic booms. This is simply another attempt to financially injure Elon Musk because of his political views.

Elon should just pull completely out of CA and move those DOD operations to Wallops Island, VA.

What toxic smoke?

The methane burn is fed by an excess oxygen feed that jacks the temperature so high the burn is complete leaving CO2 and water vapor.

Local foliage should flourish.

There is very good reason that Vandenberg AFB is a military launch site. Anything going to orbit in a south-westerly direction needs to go over the pacific, and not over land. The Texas launch site would sent westerly launches over land, either the U.S or Mexico.
