Portland man admits he got paid $200 a visit to target businesses for disability access violations

Two years ago, Conner Slevin learned from a Facebook friend about out-of-state attorneys who were said to specialize in disability access law and were looking to expand into the Pacific Northwest.

Slevin got the Tennessee lawyers’ contact numbers and reached out.

And so began a lucrative relationship that targeted dozens of Portland metro businesses for alleged violations of the Americans with Disabilities Act, netted thousands for Slevin and untold thousands for his attorneys.

Slevin on Tuesday sued his Portland attorney Jessica Molligan for $4 million, alleging malpractice. One business filed a motion in court Tuesday seeking sanctions against her. Another of the businesses separately sued her as well.

Court records say Molligan filed more than 40 “cookie cutter” lawsuits against businesses in Oregon, and the Tennessee-based lawyers filed more than 200 nationally in what one federal judge likened to a “shakedown.”

"He said he signed a “representation” agreement with two lawyers from Memphis and one from Portland. The attorneys said in the agreement that they would file disability discrimination lawsuits in federal court on Slevin’s behalf."

"He would “cooperate” with the lawyers in pursuing the claims and grant them a power of attorney so they could negotiate “any and all” settlements, according to the agreement. Slevin shared a copy of the signed pact with the news organization."

New condo development. I knew of an atty. who moved into one. His purpose was to find defects he could sue for on behalf of all the new owners. SOP.

This type of activity first made the news a few years ago.

Happy to see both that our suspicions were spot-on and that action is being taken against at least the local culprit.

“Jeez. Nobody is nice anymore...”

Lawyers never were. I still remember the debate over the Wheelchair Law that Bush Sr. wound up signing into law. The opposition (Republicans who weren’t ‘kind and gentle’, LOL) said it would result in tons of lawsuits - of course they were right and now it’s a pain in the ass to find a decent parking spot...not to mention that there are likely HUNDREDS of these Shakedown Operations. After all, why behave like the Mafia in New York, when you can do it LEGALLY throughout the US?

Well, you can think what you like about lawyers; but a good one, when you need them, is a very valuable resource to have.

Surely you jest? /s

Dick the Butcher. The first thing we do, let's kill all the lawyers.

Henry VI, Act 4, Sc 2.

As good an idea now as it was then.

That’s how the law was written.

People sue.

It’s a cash cow for lawyers.

No argument there, obviously I’m referring to a subset of lawyers, the ones who seem friendly and nice during Undergrad, but then mean an nasty after getting into Law School, as they smell the BIG BUCKS just around the corner.

Well, if you meant a 'subset', you shouldn't have said in your post 8 that 'Lawyers never were [nice]'

There have been several times when my family has needed good lawyers, and we were grateful to have them.

If we live under the Rule of Law (which I hope we always will), there will always be a need for good lawyers.
