The two astronauts who have already been stuck in space for more than 60 days may have to wait until early 2025 before they can return to Earth — following a trip to the International Space Station that was supposed to last just eight days.
NASA also acknowledged that the astronauts, who arrived on the maiden voyage of the Boeing Starliner spacecraft, may have to be rescued by the rival SpaceX CrewDragon, though that vessel won’t be ready until February.
On Wednesday, NASA announced another delay in bringing home Butch Wilmore and Suni Williams during a news conference, with the agency saying it’s now looking more closely at an alternative plan utilizing SpaceX’s Crew-9 mission.
If tests in the coming weeks suggest that making the trip home on Starliner proves too risky, Steve Stich, NASA’s Commercial Crew Program manager, said Wilmore and Williams would have no choice but to hop on Crew-9’s return flight in February 2025.

BETCHA MUSK IS READY TO LAUNCH WITHIN 4 DAYS.
Damn....SMH
A three hour tour.....a three hour tour
You beat me to it.
...a three hour tour.
They need to get rid of the Boeing capsule which is taking up one of NASA’s two docking ports. And the Boeing capsule is apparently not programmed for autonomous undocking/reentry. Hence the need for the robust space suits in case of capsule depressurization,
All the way to the moon!
Seriously - Boeing just recently delivered the second stage rocket for the Artemis moon mission.
Had the same thought- anyone up there named Gilligan?
If the entire Board of Directors of Boeing was put in jail until the astronauts returned home I bet this problem would get fixed in a hurry.
“Artemis moon mission”
They need to earn that title.
Right now it is proposed Artemis moon mission.
"It wasn't my fault. The robot did it."
With all the endless appeals, it may cost more than that to finally execute Khalid Shaikh Mohammed and his cronies.
It MUST be risky if they already stay up so long and now maybe for six months!

I heard that it was because Boeing did NOT load the software that would allow the capsule to return automatically (without humans). As I understand it (and may be wrong) but it requires someone to be inside the capsule to disconnect from the space station.
The capsule has so many problem it may not return to earth safely so it would be suicide for someone to attempt to return in it.
Corporate boondoggle. The ISS is itself a purposeless enterprise, serving as little more than a government jobs program for eggheads. The ISS is due to be de-orbited in 2030. No need to wait that long. Get all the astronauts off and drop it in the ocean as soon as possible.
This reminds me of those movies “Gravity” and “Apollo 13”.
They don’t matter. What’s important is that the team working on a solution should be diverse.
Musk was originally scheduled to launch a CrewDragon mission to the ISS on Aug 18, which is 11 days from today, but NASA just delayed that launch until Sept. 24.

Ask Elon Musk.
We may be better off if we're focusing our resources on finding a way to go to Mars. Maybe we need to dismantle NASA. They were great in the '60s. But like you said, it's nothing more than a government jobs program today.
Face it, Boeing has died from DEI and accountants. Boeing sucks so bad they blow.
Hope they stocked up on Tang.
