The White House publicly urged Israel on Monday to exercise restraint in response to the rocket attack from Lebanon over the weekend that killed 12 children and teenagers in an Israeli-controlled town, warning against an escalation that could lead to a wider regional war.
“Israel has a right to defend itself — no nation should have to live with this kind of threat,” John F. Kirby, a spokesman for the White House National Security Council, told reporters. At the same time, “we believe that there is still time and space for a diplomatic solution,” he said, adding, “Nobody wants a broader war, and I’m confident we’ll be able to avoid such an outcome.”
Israeli and American officials have attributed the attack to Hezbollah, which has denied responsibility.
Mr. Kirby played down speculation about a full-on regional conflict between Israel and the many Iranian-backed militias like Hezbollah. Israel is already at war in the Gaza Strip with Hamas, which receives support from Iran. Another Tehran-backed group, the Houthis in Yemen, has launched drones and missiles at Israel since that war began.
