Donald Trump and JD Vance are cobbling together a core constituency that includes millions of voters who are both culturally conservative and financially hard-pressed.
Trump’s selection of Vance reflects his determination to focus on incorporating middle- and lower-income, predominantly but not exclusively white men and women who often did not graduate from college, into the base of the Republican Party. To do so, Trump and Vance are taking their side on matters ranging from diversity to abortion to immigration to trade policy, promising protection from pretty much everything they don’t like about America today.
The 2024 Republican Platform provides evidence of the leverage of this ascendant bloc of voters:
“Fight for and protect Social Security and Medicare with no cuts, including no changes to the retirement age.”
“Cut federal funding for any school pushing critical race theory, radical gender ideology, and other inappropriate racial, sexual, or political content on our children.”
“Keep men out of women’s sports.”
If more proof is required, Vance told delegates in his July 18 acceptance speech:
We need a leader who’s not in the pocket of big business, but answers to the working man, union and nonunion alike. A leader who won’t sell out to multinational corporations, but will stand up for American companies and American industry.
As always, America’s ruling class wrote the checks. Communities like mine paid the price. For decades, that divide between the few, with their power and comfort in Washington, and the rest of us, only widened.

Meanwhile, it’s just fine when the Dems coalition relies on poor, often uneducated, People of Color.
I think that Vance was a decent pick. He may not pick up as many in some demographics as some others, but he won’t lose as many either. Stefanik or Vivek would have picked up a few but they would have lost a lot more religious conservatives than they picked up from other groups. People like Haley, Burghum, and Gabbard would have been risky. Carson would have been a safe pick. DeSantis would perhaps have laid the groundwork for the future. But overall I think that Vance was a pretty decent choice. It solidified a possibly shaky core demographic.
I agree. JD was a good pick.
I think overall Vance was the right pick. I was going for Carson, but I think picking J.D. helps Trump solidify support with working class whites in the the Rust Belt where the election will be decided.

Oh! You mean like Democrats do for their constituents! I understand now.
I believe dems completely changed the race, and now have every woman voter on one side.
We could get creamed. For real.
Eagleton was replaced after 18 days.
It is time to promote Vance to Secretary of State.
Run with Tulsi Gabbard as Vice President.
She strongly supports Trump, is (way) more popular, attracts MANY women …
And she is a Veteran.
The white working class voters that the left denigrates to no end today were the backbone of the Democrat Party for many years. They didn’t leave the Democrat Party. The Democrat Party left them with their embrace of globalism and the ruination of the domestic economy, and an extreme leftward tilt on every social issue from public education to popular culture and lifestyle choices.
I agree with that assessment. I also like that he’s not an establishment hack like Pence.

I thought I wanted Carson too. Until I saw him at the RNC. He’s gotten so old. He would have been the wrong pick.
Vance was picked because that is the future Trump wants for the party. Unlike Reagan, Trump had the power to ignore the party elites and pick for the future.
If Vance turns out to be presidential, this could be a very consequential VP pick. The open borders, Haley R’s will be in complete revolt against Vance in 2028. So it will be a vicious battle that will determine the soul of the party for decades.
Ooo...tell us a bed time story NYT.
What a pile of horse sh*t.
Largest group of Americans who believe the ‘Climate Change’ hoax are ‘graduates of college’.
So too are those who believe in ‘a woman’s right to choose’. (Death to the Children).
And believe that there are more than two genders.
And ‘Gun Safety’ laws.
Not being a brainwashed ‘college graduate’ has its merits.
Trump’s selection of Vance reflects his determination to focus on incorporating middle- and lower-income, predominantly but not exclusively white men and women who often did not graduate from college, into the base of the Republican Party.
I see...
Reagan picked Bush. As a result we had the Bush clan run the country for 12 years. I want a vice President who can also be a great President. Vance , so far , appears to be that guy.
She’s only liked because she hasn’t been touched. If you run with Trump you will not be treated the same as of you run with a Democrat. If Border Czar Harris was a Republican she’d be getting savaged on her record. As itnstands it’s likely only political junkies will have any idea about the vast majority of her past positions. It’s really hard to have free and fair elections when the media is owned by one party and that’s the reality.
If it’s an article from the NYT, you know that it’s lies and propaganda.
Stupid, racist, misogynistic, lazy, broke backward Troglodytes.
Vs.
Childless Cat Ladies.
And you wonder why half the country doesn’t believe anything coming out of the MSM.
Correct.
Reluctantly I have to agree with you. I was pushing for JD Vance but now I'm having buyer's remorse. There needed to be a woman on the ticket like Tulsi Gabbard to get at least some of the female vote.
Trump can't do it by himself. The only issue they care about is abortion. And voting for a female president because it will be the "historic" thing to do or should I say "hystoric"?
