No. He feared his endorsement was more harm than good . IfRFK is not assassinated he has the upper hand. McCarthy had gone from running as a protest to being hungry for the job. He hated the RFK jumped in only after he had shown LBJ’s weakness that forced him out. He thought Kennedy a pure opportunist. He approached Kennedy before Cal primary and offered that if Kennedy withdrew and endorsed him he would serve only one term and stand aside for Kennedy in 72.As one who cast his first vote in 68 I think, even with this chaotic year, that it was the most interesting political year in my lifetime.
