No. He Hubert Humphrey feared his LBJ's endorsement was more harm than good . If RFK is not had not been assassinated, he Hubert Humphrey has would have had the upper hand. McCarthy had gone from running as a protest to being hungry for the job. He McCarthy hated the that RFK jumped in only after he RFK had shown LBJ’s weakness that forced him out. He Hubert Humphrey thought Kennedy a pure opportunist. He Hubert Humphrey approached Kennedy before Cal primary and offered that if Kennedy withdrew and endorsed him Hubert Humphrey, he would serve only one term and stand aside for Kennedy in 72.

Did I get you right?

Regards,

McCarthy approached Kennedy to drop out and support him. Humphrey was running against both. Johnson supported Humphrey and through his myriad connections especiallt Daley he felt he could control the convention. The great percentage of delegates were not chosen by primary and a little patronage goes a long way. The Marilyn stuff would have come out and Hoover was ready to destroy Bobby. His being killed was not in Johnson’s interest.
