I don’t think you understand the numbers.
It took 4.5% nationally (polling said 7.5) as a Biden lead to win battlegrounds by a sum total of 30-40K votes spread across 6 states.
The issue is Calif and NY. They define the national numbers. A Kamila lead over the next two weeks will reflect Calif and NY, and keep in mind Biden already has a poll or two of 1-2% lead.
The issue . . . is Calif and NY. They are what force a 4.5% national lead to move the battlegrounds.
She’s down 2% on average and has to get to +6%. That’s not happening next week. Independents are not going to be moved by abortion. All minds are already made up on that.
She will have to do massive border closures and deportations to undo the 15ish% improvement Trump is seeing in Hispanic numbers. And . . . she’s not black. Black male Independents won’t be affected.
I do expect the media to trumpet a poll with her in the lead, but Biden already had one or two of those. She needs 4.5%, and polling was 7.5%. It’s a very long way to go.
I think most of this whole escapade was the donors had not just cut off Biden. They cut off the down ballot. They certainly didn’t decide Kamila was going to fix all the WH campaign problems.

The Democrats would never accept Romney as VP. He would have to toe a lot of left wing lines, and more importantly, somehow persuade them he has any clout anymore with the electorate.

Wrong. This is a state by state race now. A good VP choice will suddenly open up the individual battleground states. No one is looking at national polls right now.
She is half-black just like Obama. Her father was Jamaican. Jamaicans are black (well 92% of them) and from photographs he is certainly black.

The national polls define the battlegrounds.
4.5% was the national numbers and it took that, given Calif and NY at +25, to move battlegrounds to dead even.
She can’t get to dead even without 7.5% polling nationally. Because the battlegrounds are part of the national polling.
The biggest litmus surprise is Nevada. How did that happen there? Answer: Hispanics. She’s not recapturing them. And she’s not black. She won’t be capturing black male Independents.
Frankly, I am surprised she is taking the nomination. Nominees who are not incumbents and lose nearly never get another chance. She’s starting out behind. This is not the year for her to try and lose her chance forever.
Unlike Obama who was descended from slave owners, she could claim she was descended from slaves. ;-P
