'He's one handsome son of a b****': How MAGA favorite JD Vance caught Trump's eye as he weighs his pick for VP
Daily Mail ^ | Updated 09:30 EDT 11 Jul 2024 | Rob Crilly, Chief U.S. Political Correspondent

If looks are the key to Donald Trump's vice presidential pick then there is only one winner.

J.D. Vance's blue eyes and thick beard first caught the attention of the former president two years ago, when the author and former Marine was competing for the Republican nomination in Ohio's Senate race.

'He's one handsome son of a bitch,' Trump told his inner circle.

Since then Vance has emerged as one of his most formidable promoters on cable news channels.

And a strict running regimen instituted during his run for Senate has seen the possible veep lose weight recently, a fact that has not gone unnoticed by Trump himself, according to a source familiar with the former president's conversations.

'He's got the look,' is another Trump assessment, noting the slimmed down figure and choice of well-fitting suits.

It leaves the Ohio senator as one of three candidates—along with Sen. Marco Rubio, 53, and North Dakota Gov. Doug Burgum, 67—on a shortlist for vice president.

Supporters, who include the likes of Donald Trump Jr. and former Fox News anchor Tucker Carlson, say he brings a deep connection with the rust belt states that could decide the election, a personal history that embodies the American Dream, and the sort of TV skills essential for the president's number-one advocate.

Critics accuse him of being a political chameleon, selling out his Never Trump credentials at the first sniff of power.

Either way it marks an extraordinary rise for a 39-year-old brought up in the crushing poverty of southern Ohio by his heroin-addicted mother and his fierce grandmother.

His 2016 memoir, 'Hillbilly Elegy,' catapulted him to literary and political fame, establishing him as the sort of working class, white author who could decode Trump and his allure for an uncomprehending liberal and conservative establishment.

I think this is a mistake but hopefully it won’t matter now

Yeah but then the media attacked Vance for blaming Biden for the shooting even though yes it’s bidens fault but you know the media will say “trump wants unity but picks someone who blamed Biden for the shooting”

Trump’s 3 top picks are better than what you came up with. You were so sure it was going to be Kristi Noem, a horrible take. Stop simping for average looking women.

It reminds me or Rubio. Remember that when Rubio got elected, he was one of the “Tea Party” Republicans. Now he’s a standard neocon. Nothing Tea Party about him anymore. I suspect Vance will turn out the same way.

I like Youngkin, too. Better than any of the people being promoted as likely picks.

I predicted Noem all the way back in 2021 -- nearly two years before J.D. Vance was even a political figure.

I have no idea who the other two of these "3 top picks" are.

I don't mind Vance or Youngkin. I just don't want Freepers to be delusional about who these guys are.

Basically, they will both make Mike Pence look like an iconic MAGA champion.

A LOT more where those data points came from. Vance is a solid conservative.

Why do you think so about Youngkin?

I did a short dive on him a few weeks ago. His voting record is good. He’s more of a populist than a traditional Republican and he grew up rough. No silver spoon.

“JD does not add anything that Trump himself does not have and represent.”

He could be both an heir apparent and assassination insurance.

If Trump picked an insider, the Deep State would try to shoot him again.

Vance is fine on his positions, I just don’t think he’s a very charismatic speaker, he also has very little track record and almost no national name recognition.

I don’t think he’s going to help getting any additional voters.

“Vance may appear populist but he’s got an Ivy League, Wall Street law firm, venture capital background.”

That could describe me.

We all make youthful indiscretions.

I had to go there to know they were snakes.

Look at his resume:

- McKinsey & Company - The Carlyle Group

These are two of the most firmly entrenched Beltway/globalist companies in U.S. government circles.

You might as well name some dude who spent his career with the World Economic Forum as your VP candidate.

“He could be both an heir apparent and assassination insurance.”

I think there are others that can serve that purpose just as well.

“If Trump picked an insider, the Deep State would try to shoot him again.”

I do not think he should pick a D.C. “insider”. But to not pick an “insider” does not mandate his choice be JD.

Now go back and check the same ratings for Mike Pence and Jeff Sessions (for example) in 2016.

And now try to imagine how poorly Donald Trump would have graded out back then, too.

None of those ratings from political grift rackets should mean anything to anyone on this website.
