~The FReeper Canteen Presents~

Road Trip: Cheyenne Mountain Complex, Colorado

COcheyennemountain1

The Cheyenne Mountain Complex is a United States Space Force installation and defensive bunker located in unincorporated El Paso County, Colorado, next to the city of Colorado Springs, at the Cheyenne Mountain Space Force Station, which hosts the activities of several tenant units.

Also located in Colorado Springs is Peterson Space Force Base, where the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) and United States Northern Command (USNORTHCOM) headquarters are located.

COcheyennemountain6

The complex was built under 2,000 feet of granite on five acres. Fifteen three-story buildings are protected from movement, e.g., earthquake or explosion, by a system of giant springs that the buildings sit on and flexible pipe connectors to limit the operational effect of movement.

A total of more than 1,000 springs are designed to prevent any of the 15 buildings from shifting more than one inch. The complex is the only underground Department of Defense facility certified to be able to sustain a high-altitude electromagnetic pulse (EMP). There are a large quantity of cots for most of the personnel, including suites for high-ranking officers within the bunker.

COcheyennemountain5

The bunker is built to deflect a 30 megaton nuclear explosion as close as 1.2 miles. Within a mountain tunnel are sets of 25-ton blast doors and another for the civil engineering department. The doors were built so that they can always be opened when needed. Should a nuclear blast hit the building, they are designed to withstand a blast wave. There is a network of blast valves with unique filters to capture airborne chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear contaminants.

COcheyennemountain4

The complex has its own power plant, heating and cooling system, and water supply. The 21st Mission Support Group ensures there is a 99.999% degree of reliability of its electricity, water, air conditioning, power, and other support systems.

The threats, in descending order of likelihood, that the complex may face are "medical emergencies, natural disasters, civil disorder, a conventional attack, an electromagnetic pulse attack, a cyber or information attack, chemical or biological or radiological attack, an improvised nuclear attack, a limited nuclear attack, [and] a general nuclear attack." The least likely events are the most hazardous.

Howdy, Kathy.

I thought you might have a sunny second half of the day up there after the gloomy start. At least there was sunshine for a while but it’s looking gloomy again.

I visited C Springs for a week in 1999, to help out at my company location there. My hotel room had a great view of Cheyenne Mountain.

In 1985 the USAF personnel system screwed up and I was given two assignments, one to Cheyenne Mountain and one to Key West. Sadly, I chose Key West Naval Station.

In my defense, it had just snowed, and a warm place seemed very attractive.

Hey radu, yeah we got triple-digits today and probably for a few more days but that's what happens this time every July and summer.

At least we don't have high humidity which makes it worse.

I just do whatever shopping I need to do early and then just been hibernating with the A/C blowing and my ceiling fans whirling.

Are those kittehs staying cool?

I’m not whining today because it’s been really nice, but when those temps go back up to 99+, I sure will be. LOL!

We aren’t quite as hot as you are but it’s plenty toasty. We do have the humidity you lack and our heat index today was probably close to your temp.

I haven’t been getting out much and try to do errands in the evening. Sometimes, like today, I have to do it in the afternoon since I don’t go to bed until early morning. LOL

The kitties don’t g outside so they’ve been plenty cool through all this mess. I feel sorry for Hubby’s cousin’s cat though. I’m taking care of her while he and his girlfriend are on vacation and she’s always outside. The yard is very shady, at least, but if there’s no breeze it’s uncomfortable. She’s faring well at least.

I’ll be whining with you this weekend unless something changes. We’re going to be pushing the 99 degree mark. :-( Not going to be much cooler than that this week. All the 80s they’d predicted just three days ago are no longer on the forecast map. *sigh*

Holy cow! Your 99 will equate to about 105 when you add in the humidity. That’s horrible.

Did you get to run your errands today without melting? How is Miss Cat today?

Yep. Unless the forecast changes between now and then, next weekend is going to be rough.

I got the errands done but I wasn’t happy about having to get out. I have no tolerance for heat any more. At all. It stinks because early voting starts Friday here and the Republican women’s group usually sets up a tent. None of us are young and most can’t tolerate heat either. Not sure if we’re going to set the tent up this year. It’ll be one of the topics we’ll discuss at the meeting Thursday.

Miss Cat wasn’t in a good mood today because it was so stifling. Just a breeze would have helped but the air was still. Poor cat.

I’m totally disgusted right now. A large batch of rain came up from Huntsville but when it got here, it fizzled out. Not a drop of rain here. Tomorrow’s prospects for rain are pretty much zero. We can’t win for losin’.

I totally feel your pain and you know I am and will go through all that again and again. I don’t tolerate heat anymore, either. It’s depressing to me and makes me one crabby gal. LOL! That’s why today was so pleasant. It wasn’t scorching my skin OR my nerves.

I think Miss Cat is like us. LOL! I hope the two of you get some relief soon. As far as the tent, aren’t there portable ACs that the group could purchase to make it tolerable in there while y’all are doing your thang? Of course, I have no clue as to how expensive one would be.

Well, I didn’t get rain but I got SOME benefit tonight. It cooled off several degrees quickly and it’s windy. The wind feels good and I know it makes Miss Cat feel better. The wind’s out of the south and the porch is on the south side of their house so she’s getting a good dose. I’ll go over in a couple of hours to top off her food dish, and tonight is treat night as well.

There isn’t anywhere to plug anything in where we all have to set up the tents.

A very pleasant good Tuesday morning and ((HUGS)) to everyone at the Canteen and to all our military at home and abroad. Thanks for your service to our country and thanks Lauren for this morning's thread.

Yesterday at Comanche Lake:

How's everyone doing this morning?

Howdy, E.G.C. ((HUGZ))

Another toasty day, I see. Gizmo seemed more interested in trying to drain the lake than in romping. :-)

It was a little toasty but not as bad as the last couple of weeks. We also didn't have too many people around. It was pretty much the lake all to ourselves.

I also did some lawn mowing yesterday. The grass was growing from all the rain we had.

Do you suppose you just got the “cool” front that we got this morning that brought quite a bit of wind and the wonderful rain?

Sorry you didn’t get the rain, but you and Miss Cat enjoy the cooler evening. Maybe you can sit with her and talk to her like her own “mom” does.

Glad you got a little bit of a break.

Bet you two enjoyed having the lake to yourselves after what must have been a busy weekend. More relaxing that way.

No, it isn’t a cool front. It’s just wind being drawn into what’s left of Beryl as it moves up. The wind felt good but it was still 80 degrees. 78 now. If the wind wasn’t blowing, it would be a little uncomfortable because it’s still muggy.

I always sit with Miss Cat and talk to her when I go over there. And I give her skritches and brush her. I’m still getting a lot of hair out of her coat. I don’t think she’s ever been brushed.

Well, if it’s cooler, to me it’s a cool front. LOL! Anything that will minimize the muggy stuff is ok with me.

She is going to miss you when they come back. Maybe you can sneak over there and brush her occasionally. Or not. 🐈‍⬛

I’ve been brushing Tux a bit while he’s eating. He’s not loving it, but he lets me for a short time, and his hair is looking better. If I could just get the mats out of his long bushy tail. Poor ol’ guy has been neglected for so long. :(

A cool front would bring cooler, drier air down from the north. This is just air being sucked up from the south by Beryl’s remnants and it’s moist air. And still warm. Without the breeze, it would be sticky out there. The wind is now just a little breeze but it’s enough to make it feel alright. We have another toasty day ahead.

Too bad you can’t get the mats out of Tux’s tail. But at least you can get some of the excess hair off his body and that helps him feel cooler. They can use all the help they can get when it’s super hot.

Heading over there now to set her up with what she needs until tomorrow afternoon.
