Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer (D) said in a new interview that she doesn’t like seeing her name mentioned as a possible replacement for President Biden if he leaves the presidential campaign.
“It’s a distraction more than anything,” she told The Associated Press. “I don’t like seeing my name in articles like that because I’m totally focused on governing and campaigning for the ticket.”
The governor has been a top name floated to replace Biden on the Democratic ticket should he end his reelection campaign. A rising number of critics has asked to step down, amid concerns over his age and electoral viability following a poor debate performance last month.
Whitmer in the interview acknowledged criticism over Biden’s debate performance, but stood by the president.

Interesting in that I live in Georgia and we got called from a polling company, don’t remember who, that started out asking who we were voting for in the presidential election. Then started touting all of the accomplishments of Gretchen Whitmer and would that changed our mind so we would vote for her.

She jumped out early throwing dirt over Joe and some party leaders didn’t like it. Now she’s pretending to support Joe even though she knows he’ll be replaced. She just wants her name out there.

That’s it exactly: she and other Dem hopefuls — Witchy Whitmer, Toothsome Newsom, et al. — aren’t going to waste political capital on a hopeless run vs. Trump. They’ll wait until 2028. If anyone other than Biden is on the 2024 ticket it’ll be Kamala, and she’ll be there to take the hit and then fade away.
The game of who can pretend more not to want it continues apace.
