Target will soon stop accepting this form of payment (personal checks)

Target will no longer be accepting personal checks as a form of payment at its stores beginning later this month, the company confirmed.

The Minnesota-based big-box retail chain will stop taking checks this month due to “extremely low volumes,” of such payments, a spokesperson told NBC Chicago.

The company has taken “several measures” to notify customers in advance, the spokesperson added.

The change will go into effect on July 15 following the end of Target’s popular Circle Week sales event.

While personal checks will no longer be accepted, the store will still take cash, credit and debit cards, Target Circle Cards, digital wallets, SNAP/EBT cards and buy now-pay later services, Target said.

The Post has reached out to Target for comment.

The move comes as the retail giant has made several money-saving changes as it says its been plagued by thefts.

In March, Target imposed a 10-item limit for customers using self-checkout.

Just last week, Target instructed store staff to stop thieves who try to flee with items totaling $50, down from the previous sum of $100.

Target’s chief financial officer, Michael Fiddelke, told investors last fall that the company expects shoplifting to be a “significant financial headwind.”

I think I've written two checks in the past ten years.

I've probably got a few checkbooks scattered in various junk drawers around the house and in the garage with multiple different addresses on them of places I lived at from 2003-2011.

This is somewhat odd as checks today are scanned electronically via routing and acct# on the bottom. The money is immediately withdrawn from your checking account at the point of sale.

It's not like the old days when you could "kite" checks because it took several days from the time the business deposited the check in their bank until the funds were drawn from yours. Those days are long gone.

Another way they are starting to remove dollars and cents from the marketplace. And bringing on the cashless society. Where all your transactions will be known and recorded and monitored for social scoring compliance. If your purchases do not comport you will be shut down and will not be able to transact any business. So go ahead and continue to be smug and cavalier about losing your checking account functionality, you frogs in pots.

I write checks whenever I want to document the exchange of funds. Granted that I do not write many checks, but that is because Brandon has limited my funds that I can have after paychecks.

The local tax collector charges for credit cards, so he gets a check as does a regulator in another state (although they’ll take an electronic check and convert it to an ACH transaction). Church collection plate because it’s a lower cost to them than a credit or debit card. Lawn guy.

Everything else is electronic. IRS even gets paid electronically, although I realize the dangers of doing so.

I had the same thought. I have actually been considering switching to checks instead of plastic in order to deprive the banksters of any revenue from me.

Had an aunt who wrote checks for everything....she said she didn’t trust debit because they just go straight to your account. I started to tell her but she was too old school to grasp it. Bless her heart.

Eventually, we will adjust to a new currency in a black market. Cigarettes may be valuable.

When I was a broke college student 30+ years ago we called this "check roulette" where I'd write a check and hoped that I could get my paycheck deposited before the check hit my bank.

Sometimes I won. Sometimes I didn't. And it was sure expensive when I didn't (when that $5 pizza turned into a $50 pizza after penalties were accrued).

Winco Supermarket just completely got rid of self-checkout where I live. Both Ralph's and Winco lock up their H+B aisles after 7pm. It's a Scared New World.
