What you didn’t learn in history class about California’s flag
Los Angeles Times ^ | July 3, 2024 | By Ryan Fonseca

It’s that stars-and-stripes, American-flag-waving time of year. And throughout the Golden State, the California flag typically takes a place of honor beside it.

But how much do you know about the origins of the state flag — the grizzly bear perched on a patch of green, the red star high on the left, the words “California Republic” below?

It’s a story rooted in a cunning land grab by white insurgents who hastily drew a rough image of a bear and hoisted their crude flag over what had been Mexican territory, proclaiming it to be the California Republic. Some of those men abused and enslaved Indigenous people in their quest for wealth and power.

Damn white people ruined the state

They probably didn’t even call them by their preferred pronouns.

Talk about beating a dead bear. All those “imperialists” are dust now. But the evil racist beat goes on.

Eventually, the Mexicans will do a better job at governing California than left wing Democrats like Gavin Newsom.

The good thing about corruption is that it's accessible for everybody. Right now, you have to be a member of the elite in the Democratic Party to benefit from it in California.

So it'll be an improvement under new management.

So how did the banner raised by insurgents with a legacy of racist violence become our state flag?

Fonseca's choice of words shows this is not a journalistic endeavor, but one to promote his own agenda. I'd take everything in this article with a huge grain (block?) of salt.

From the article: He explained that many of the Bear Flaggers, as they are now called, left a trail of violence against Indigenous people on the land they seized under the pretense of manifest destiny.

A lot of what the article says is true. By citing this book, I am not saying that I agree with its author (I read it), but data is data, and some of it is pretty grizzly.

I have no doubt that the Mexicans can do a better job than American Leftists…American Leftists can only pillage (for personal gain) and destroy.. California will be better governed, by far, under the Mexican cartels.

It'll be more business friendly. If you operate a business in Mexican controlled California, you'll pay a small bribe. Then you'll be permitted to operate your business. You'll get to ignore the regulations by the government. You're not paying the minimum wage. **** that.

“Fonseca’s choice of words shows this is not a journalistic endeavor, but one to promote his own agenda”

And that agenda is “dees ees Mehico!”

His absurd claims that Mexico “controlled the land” is the key point. Mexico controlled NOTHING. The seizure of 250,000 acres from Mariano Vallejo in Sonoma showed that the Mexican land grants were nothing but overblown ridiculous claims to vast areas where no Spaniard existed, let alone “controlled”.

But that’s the Mexican mindset.

Even Mariano Vallejo went along with it. He ended up with 800 acres - a nice ranch - and sided with the rebels. Even went along with becoming an American territory.

But Vallejo wasn’t an idiot, and didn’t consider himself Mexican either. Unlike the irredentist Fonseca, who drools at the thought of Mexican California resurgent.

the history of the LATimes is similarly very interesting
if there were ever a mouth-organ of and for (and an active participant in) imperialism, theft, exploitation, racism, antisemitism, and corruption galore, the LASlimes was said to be it

What a ridiculous coverage. Libs have no shame, because they have no souls. But if they did, they would be ashamed of such feces.

Except the US took it from the Spaniards who took it from the natives, who definitely did not have European names like Fonseca.

I grew up in California and back then we learned about California history in the 4th grade (long enough ago when 4th-graders were expected to know how to read). Anyway, California was Mexican territory for all of twenty-seven years; it had been Spanish for much longer than that. In fact the Californios never referred to themselves as Mexican, always as Spanish.

California was geographically isolated from Mexico proper. Northern Mexico is desert. Central Mexico is lush with a year-round growing season. Lots of inhospitable land lay between central Mexico and Texas, California, & New Mexico and few Mexicans wanted to make the move to any of them. On top of that, wind, waves and currents made traveling to California by sea from Mexico difficult at best.

The fact is there wen’t many ‘Mexicans’ in California when the ‘cunning land-grabbing white insurrectionists raised their crude flag and it is why California was so easily taken.

I’ve seen a lot of articles pushing the mass genocide narrative.

They always seem weak in actual data.

It’s seems like a lot of extrapolation and exaggeration.

It’s the 1619 for California.

And hated the government in Mexico.

True, to the point that one of the Spanish monks falsified the record of the Portola Expedition in order to attract Mexican ranchers. Selling hides was their principal source of income.

The fact is there wen’t many ‘Mexicans’ in California when the ‘cunning land-grabbing white insurrectionists raised their crude flag and it is why California was so easily taken.

The Spanish and Mexicans after them were so desperate for white settlers that they took in those who eventually deposed them. It was an incompetent government.
