Armed attackers killed a woman in front of her horrified husband as they attempted to rob the couple outside an upmarket Newport Beach mall, police have said.
The 69-year old woman and her husband had been outside a Barnes & Noble at the Fashion Island mall when they were approached by two men at around 3.30 pm on Tuesday.
A 'struggle' ensued, with one of the men fleeing the scene on foot and firing several rounds with a handgun as he did so, according to reports.

Newport Beach is an incredibly wealthy area and Fashion Island is a very upscale shopping area - shoppers have high end cars, fancy jewelry and designer handbags.
Fortunately, the DA, Todd Spitzer is a Republican, unlike the criminal friendly Los Angeles DA, Gascon, who would have already released the perps with ankle bracelets, which they'd then cut off.
This was the mayor of Newport Beach. I can assure you he doesn’t vote for Democrats.
That über wealthy area in So Cal - the OC - will find out that THEY are no longer immune from violent crime - even behind exclusive areas with private 24/7 security, gates and high fences.
Cops on my local radio show said homes in that area are being targeted by “foreign gangs” from South America using technology that by passes security systems.

I feel so sorry for the couple. They make it to their golden years and this happens to them. What a lousy way for the widower to spend his final years without his wife. He’ll be replaying the encounter over and over in his mind to his dying breath.
