The Paris Olympic village will be fitted with 2,500 temporary cooling units when athletes arrive later this month, organisers said Tuesday, in a blow to the event's eco-friendly credentials. The organising committee had initially announced they would steer clear of air conditioning in the athletes' accommodation, instead using a geothermal cooling system.
The complex in a northern suburb of Paris was built as a showcase of environmentally friendly technology and has a geothermal cooling system that uses cool water pumped from deep beneath the ground.
But the lack of air-conditioning has long worried some national Olympic teams, with athletes concerned about missing sleep, particularly given the summer heat waves suffered by Paris in recent years.
The mayor of Paris, Anne Hidalgo, who heads the Olympics infrastructure group Solideo, had ruled out using portable air-conditioners in the village last year, while other officials have stressed that they were not necessary.
"I have a lot of respect for the comfort of athletes, but I think a lot more about the survival of humanity," she told French radio station France Info in February 2023.

So what makes them think that there is going to be power made available to run all these air conditioners they are supposedly taking with them?
That reminds me of when the Summer when most of France left on vacation (late 90s?) and left their elderly in the heatwave leading to mass heat strokes and deaths.
It should be noted that the efficiency of portable air conditioners is SIGNIFICANTLY LESS than that of permanent air conditioners, due to its condenser having to draw inside air and then expel it outside - thus requiring make-up air from the outside. Nice for refreshing the air, sucks to send the already-cool air outside.
So the net effect of this stunt by the Olympic Committee was to INCREASE Global Warming, when considered against just having regular air conditioning to start with.
It is likely that the electric system in the Olympic buildings will be overtaxed, causing chaos when buildings become incinerated overnight. Oh well...saving the earth takes some sacrifices.

My portable A/C unit recirculates the inside air through the evaporator coil until it hits a temperature set point, then it cycles the compressor to hold it there. A separate fan blows air over the condenser coil to pull out the heat; it is that heated air which is exhausted to the outside.
However, I've experienced permanent air conditioning as executed by many places in France. I don't think they really grasp the concept, at least in many of the hotels. Either that or they don't want to spend the money to beef up the electrical grid in Paris and other cities to handle the added load (I assume they have enough generating capacity, with all those nuke plants).
That is the way portable units work, and they do work, but obviously you cannot continuously expel air without making it up in some matter. When the condenser is outdoors, then you’re not expelling any inside air to cool the condenser.
As to the hotels in Europe - I’m convinced they’re under orders to limit how low their air conditioners can be set. Pretty stupid since soon their only ‘product’ will be tourism, thanks to them self de-industrializing by both listening to the Neocons and listening to the Globalists.
God, how I loathe such idiocy. Like when the Sebastopol, CA, City Council insisted on buying the Fire Chief a Prius instead of a gas-powered SUV. (Yes, this really happened...). Even the local Toyota dealership was against the idea, and said so in a letter to the Council, noting that such a vehicle was not designed for the kind of use it would be put to in a public safety role. They forged ahead, regardless, and bought the f’ing Prius. The Chief resigned.
