UPDATE, 1:35 p.m. PT: Nielsen has released an update on Thursday’s Biden-Trump presidential debate, and the average audience has climbed to 51.3 million viewers, across 17 networks. Networks include CNN, which originated the debate, as well as ABC, CBS, FOX, NBC, Scripps News, Telemundo, Univision, BET, CNN en Español, HLN, Fox Business, Fox News Channel, MSNBC, Newsmax, NewsNation and PBS. Audience estimates include out-of-home viewing for all networks except Newsmax, NewsNation, PBS and Scripps News.

With the incredible media focus on last night's debate, I'm not sure I believe the low count. In September 2016, Clinton vs Trump had 84 million and Biden vs Trump in September 2020 had 73 million.

I can relate to that. It was like watching a 90 minute train wreck.

Right.
I watched it on Newsmax. I wonder if they were in included in Niellson’s data? I wouldn’t be surprised if they weren’t.

Also, how “scientific” is their data?
It used to be that they had volunteer who agreed to have their viewing habits collected, but those people were a small sample size.
Now, I understand that many of the cable and streaming providers have more accurate ways to estimate what content is being viewed, but I am still suspicious that it all gets aggregated.

Yes, the images and the lost words were epic. All we missed was him falling over. Sad for the US. The traumatized talking heads on CNN and MSNBC right afterward was equal but very entertaining.
