President Trump has focused his 2024 campaign on a number of issues that one would expect, but he shook up the game this summer by issuing a new policy proposal: “No Tax On Tips.”
While his campaign hasn’t released the usual detailed policy papers on it yet, the president made it clear what he means: “restaurant workers, hospitality workers, and anybody else who gets tips.”
The Left responded immediately with what they see as the downside: by reducing federal taxes on tips, federal revenues would drop by a huge amount of money, or at least, by an amount of money that sounds huge.
The Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget declared that this program would likely cost the federal government between $150 and $250 billion in revenues over ten years. The Democrats consider this terribly irresponsible.
But they happily spend that much in weaponry for a war between Russia and Ukraine, or for hotels, food, education, transportation and hospital bills for illegal aliens. At least President Trump’s proposal is for American workers.
And when you re-read that number, you see that the estimate is over ten years. That means the accountants are estimating a cost to the federal government averaging $15 to $25 billion per year, in a nation with a federal government currently running a $2 trillion deficit on a $6.5 trillion annual budget.
Viewed in that context, to describe President Trump’s proposal as being a drop in the bucket – a veritable rounding error -- would hardly be an exaggeration.
What’s the visual on this? The modern Left can’t bear to miss out on an opportunity to take the last dollar out of a waitress’ hand as she boards the city bus to go home at 1:00 a.m.

Won’t take too long for someone to work out how to reclassify regular wages as tips.
The actual money is important enough, but it would relieve these hard working people of the burden of doing the accounting for that money.
i remember when the IRS started enforcing the rule
they were handing out very large assessments to
busboys, cooks and waiters
many could not pay
That's why it's called a Tax CUT.
Liberals want all income tracked so that a stratified society can be created. They want waiters to only be able to rise so far in their economic status before they hit a roof. It does not matter to the liberal that some waiters are so good at what they do that they deserve to earn as much as a quality doctor, lawyer or actor. Waiters are lower class and should stay there, in the mind of the liberal.
True of most everything every Presidential candidate has ever promised, but he gets credit for an idea that will appeal to far more voters than will do the math.
Smart campaign move by Trump. But probably not a fair one.
Let’s say a waiter makes $8 a per hour. Plus he earns another $10 per hour in tips. And there’s a roofer who makes $18 per hour. It would seem to me that both people should be treated the same.
If by some good fortune, Trump gets re-elected President, WE NEED A CONGRESS ( both houses ) that will cooperate with him to enact this into law. Otherwise, it’s all wishful thinking.
A split Congress won’t do, we need Trump as President AND conservative Republicans in control of BOTH HOUSES to enact this.
It remains to be seen whether this can happen.
It does not matter. IT is a brilliant WEDGE issue.
The majority of people who work for tips are lower middle class or lower. Many are women. Lots of those women are single mothers. People who have never had to work for tips do not realize how tough of a job it is.
FYI, when I met Mrs Woodbutcher she was a waitress with an eight year old daughter. She was divorced from an alcoholic first husband. Hence, I almost always tip 20%.
Yup...kids would benefit.
If the roofer wants to be a waitress instead they can. There are pros & cons in every job choice. It is not the Governments job to make it “fair”. Where would that end? In communism IMO.
Not impossible, but minimum wage laws would make this difficult.
In a service economy, many people earn tips. Reagan implemented this rule administratively, and no Rat since has rescinded that change. Trump knows this will earn votes from the Rat base, and he is a very smart man.
Tips are gifts. Gifts are not taxable.
The 16th Amendment which I loathe and despise gives the feds constitutional power to stand in the way of a lot of this.
> Hence, I almost always tip 20%. <
I’m kinda cheap by nature. So I’m ashamed to say that I never tipped much. Then one day I was dining with a friend. I left 10% as a tip. My friend gave me a hard look. “Nobody is getting rich working at a restaurant. If you can’t afford to leave a good tip, you can’t afford to eat out.”
He was right. I now leave 20% for adequate service. More for good service. What about for poor service? Still 20%. I’m thinking the server was probably just having a bad day. We all have bad days.
Succinct and brilliant!
Agreed. Trump’s “no tax on tips” is a game changer.
Tip recipients would not be the only winners.
Trump’s second term has the potential to right the ship of state for all Americans. This proposal is a powerful impetus to get that 2nd term secured.
Wouldn’t that somebody be answerable to Trump appointees?
