> Hence, I almost always tip 20%. <

I’m kinda cheap by nature. So I’m ashamed to say that I never tipped much. Then one day I was dining with a friend. I left 10% as a tip. My friend gave me a hard look. “Nobody is getting rich working at a restaurant. If you can’t afford to leave a good tip, you can’t afford to eat out.”

He was right. I now leave 20% for adequate service. More for good service. What about for poor service? Still 20%. I’m thinking the server was probably just having a bad day. We all have bad days.

We always leave 20%, if waited on at a table.

Tips for buffet restaurants, we also leave 20% tips.

Tips for self-service at a Chipotle or McDonalds or the like—very seldom.

“If you can’t afford to leave a good tip, you can’t afford to eat out.”

Exactly right.
