Democracy Just Died a Painful Death in California

California is beyond saving

...

California Supreme Court .. block an anti-tax initiative from appearing on the ballot.

This initiative, known as the Taxpayer Protection and Government Accountability Act, was backed by the business community and sought to make it more difficult to increase taxes in California. Among other things, it would have required the legislature to obtain voter approval for any new or increased state taxes. There's nothing groundbreaking about it, as voters in other states have used the ballot box to approve or deny tax initiatives before. But Gavin Newsom and the Democrat-controlled legislature were having none of it and filed a lawsuit to block the measure last fall, claiming that the initiative .. would hinder government operations..

California Supreme Court unanimously sided with Newsom.

...

State leaders — who brought the lawsuit challenging the measure — had also argued the measure usurped their authority.

...

Republican Senate Minority Leader Brian Jones, however, was "disgusted" with the ruling, and accused the court of succumbing to political pressure.

“The court has failed in its duty to the people of California and our democratic system and instead simply caved to pressure from the governor and legislative Democrats,” ...

Sen. Brian Dahle criticized the decision as a "slap in the face" to citizens and accused the court's partisan justices of interfering with the initiative process meant to safeguard the public's voice, while catering to those who repeatedly seek to increase taxes.

...

Newsom had “effectively erased the voice” of more than a million voters who had signed the petition to put the measure on ballots.

California Senate Republicans who had backed the measure denounced the decision as a partisan one from a liberal court.

California Supreme Court silenced the voices of the voters.

It croaked a while back.

Deep State continues to make sure.

Case in point...

CA, like NY, is about to drop the fig leaf with regard to the Fifth Column...er, Fourth Estate.

It used to be that California voters had the opportunity to vote on measures, and then the liberal politicians would go to court to block outcomes they didn’t like.

They’re just skipping a couple of steps now.

I’ve always wondered how California can be so schizophrenic, voting generally conservatively on ballot measures, but also electing the most loony power-hungry leftist politicians in the race. One would think that people who want to be governed according to conservative principles would vote for the politicians to give them that. But, no, that doesn’t happen in CA.

That’s just one more reason I decided not to move back to CA and went to TX instead.

Do the proponents of this measure have the option to appeal to the USSC or is it totally a state matter and it is done now?
Not a lawyer and have limited legal knowledge.
Thanks for all with opinions for indulging my questions here.

That’s what legislators are for. You deal with them in November.

Which Annandale? Northern Va. has a city named Annandale, and I always thought that was the city Steely Dan was singing about, until I learned there was an Annandale on Hudson or something like that in New York, and Bard College is located there. That was what the song was really referring to, supposedly. 😋

LOL! These are Democrats. We haven't had a legitimate statewide election in California in over 20 years. This is a State where "educational administrators" outnumber teachers, where Judicial Watch busted LA for 1.4 MILLION bogus registrations, and where illegals come in and out getting a new driver's license and are therefore registered each time.

This IS Democrat Dystopia; and California leads the way! What could have been Switzerland on steroids is heading for a sick combination of Mad Max and Blade Runner.

Nobody will do anything about it. These communists advance and people tsk tsk and make some comment on social media. Nothing happens to them, why stop what they’re doing? Anyone really think the government is going to let you vote out a tax? I don’t see how this is sustainable.

“California Supreme Court silenced the voices of the voters.”

Well, in all fairness, it IS in their Job Description. You’ll find it in, ‘All Other Duties As Assigned.’

*SMIRK*

Last Conservative out of California, please turn out the lights!

Oh, wait! The rolling blackouts will take care of that for ya. ;)

Don’t understand what gives the courts the authority to do this, it looks to me they are running the country.

It’s a state matter. The ruling was based on the state constitution.
