Pre-recorded emergency announcement was automatically played on the Boeing 777 flight...
Chaos ensued on a recent United Airlines flight following an automated emergency announcement that instructed passengers to put on their oxygen masks, which inadvertently deployed in spite of no danger present.
The unusual incident occurred on a Boeing 777-200 from Charles de Gaulle Airport in Paris to Dulles International Airport in Washington, D.C., last Wednesday.
While passengers were instructed to wear the oxygen masks, only a few were actually deployed.
...
One person had a panic attack and ran to the aircraft door, presumably to open it," Pitman shared. "None of the flight crew nor cabin crew had ever heard the announcement before, and it was a very odd situation."
...
flight attendants also struggled to contact the pilots through the interphone system.

“United Airlines Boeing flight turns chaotic when oxygen masks are ‘inadvertently deployed’ mid-flight”
If I were there, I would SCREAM. (not that it does any good, but it is an appropriate response)
Sure open the door at 35,000 feet and get sucked out .
The HAL 9000 thought this would be funny.
Plane is almost 30 years old.
Something wrong with the equipment - it’s more concerning that only a few dropped than if all of them had dropped.
The individual that ran to the door probably needs to go on the no-fly list.
“...None of the flight crew nor cabin crew had ever heard the announcement before...”
Why have they not been trained for things that could happen while in flight???? This is totally ridiculous...
Thank God I don’t ever fly anymore...
Airplane II film scene.
Striker: You got to get those people away from that bomb.
Mary: Well, what should I say?
Striker : Anything. Just don’t let Solucci think that we’re onto him.
Mary: I’ll do my best.
Mary: [Over Intercom] Attention ladies and gentlemen, please. Would everybody move to the lounge who is not carrying a bomb.
[Everyone on the plane stands up and screams]
Amazing, no Boeing bashers yet??? Especially the annoying “I ain’t going” guy.
Impossible to open unless the plane is depressurized
There was a British comedy some years back called ‘Coupling’. Similar to and in my opinion much funnier than ‘Friends’. Anyway, one quote has stayed with me. ‘The most optimistic sentence ever said, “Take the mask and breathe normally.”
I think the Moody Blues told me to “breathe deep...” when I see some like this and then recite some poetry. Maybe sing a little song.
Luckily you can't open the door at that altitude. Way to much internal air pressure. Several attempts no successes.
I put no cred on what some passenger says ...
“Impossible to open unless the plane is depressurized”
Cabin depressurization is what drops the masks.
I’ve had this happen on a biz jet I was flying. Flow of ox causes the masks to drop. In our case the valve that controls the ox flow failed to the open position. Oops.
Do you know why Payne Stewart’s private jet lost air pressure so quickly that even the pilots could not ( apparently )grab their air masks ?
The crew just missed the indications. At very high altitudes you don’t have but a few seconds to catch it. Pilot error.
Thank you.
Maybe people are starting to realize this is not a Boeing problem.
It is a United Airlines problem, specifically incompetent maintenance and training. And they are not the only airline with this problem. But they are so proud of their commitment to "DIEversity".
Look on the bright side. At least the masks dropped.
