A document put together within the IDF’s Gaza Division less than three weeks before October 7 warned that Hamas was training for a large-scale invasion of Israel during which hostages would be taken en masse, according to an Israeli television report Monday.
The document by Military Intelligence’s Unit 8200 was circulated on September 19 and was reportedly brought to the attention of at least some senior intelligence officials, but ignored.
It estimated the target number of hostages at 200-250, according to the Kan public broadcaster, citing unnamed security sources. During the actual October 7 massacre, 251 hostages were taken and 1,200 others were killed, mostly civilians.
Similar reports were subsequently published by other Hebrew media outlets.
The detailed document described a series of exercises by the Palestinian terror group’s elite forces who drilled raids on Israeli towns and military posts, on how to hold soldiers and civilians hostage when back inside Gaza, and in what conditions they can be killed.
Commandos in Hamas’s elite Nukhba force were instructed not to leave documents behind after they raided bases, according to the memo. Terrorists were told to ensure hostages did not have telephones on them, were forbidden from informing hostages’ families of their condition, and to move them if it became apparent that Israel determined their location.
Terrorists were also required to threaten to kill hostages to deter others from escaping.
The document was brought to the attention of senior intelligence officials, at least within the Gaza Division, unnamed security officials told Kan. The government and top military leaders have contended they were not warned about an imminent planned invasion at the time.
The report added that the most extreme scenario the Gaza Division had prepared for before October 7 was dozens of terrorists breaching the border in three spots — far less than the estimated 3,000 who ended up entering Israel during the onslaught.
One of the soldiers involved in the report wrote after October 7, “I feel like crying, yelling and swearing,” according to Kan.
In its response to the report, the military did not acknowledge the document, but said it was investigating the failures that led to the massacre and would present them, “transparently to the public.”
The report follows several others in which the military was said to have received some prior warning of the massacre. Israel had multiple sources of information on Hamas’s drills and other preparations for an assault in the weeks and even hours ahead of October 7, reportedly including a 2022 attack plan from the terror group.
A military assessment in 2022 determined it was too soon to say the plan had been approved by Hamas, and when an analyst with the country’s signals intelligence unit noted the organization had carried out a training exercise in line with the plan, her warnings were dismissed.

Following the October 7 onslaught, surveillance soldiers who served along the border with Gaza said they had raised concerns before that day about suspicious activity but were ignored.
The IDF had long touted its security fence, with cameras, watchtowers and high-tech sensors, as providing security to residents of Gaza border towns. But on October 7, Hamas terrorists knocked chunks of it aside with explosives and bulldozers at multiple locations, then drove right through the gaping holes in jeeps and on motorcycles, while others sailed over in hang gliders, as drones dropped explosives on observation towers and took out cameras.
Amid a simultaneous rocket barrage across southern and central Israel, an estimated 3,000 terrorists stormed into southern Israel and slaughtered soldiers and civilians alike, with some local resistance but the military establishment slow to react.
The Israeli military announced earlier this month that it would begin to present its investigations into its failures in the lead-up to the Hamas terror group’s October 7 attacks in July.
I think you explained your position well here:

If the nay-sayers want to continue to harp on you without reading what you actually wrote, let them continue with their own personal Festivus.
I can’t tell. I’m not close enough to Israeli politics. They seem evenhanded from afar.
A couple of my hosts in Israel were nice people, but wacked out leftists. Their hatred of Netanyahu was bluntly stated. That’s my point of reference for anti-Netanyahu slant.
Oh well! I knew that by merely posting the article the air would fill with fire and counterfire. Fair enough!
A base commander in the Negev told us the story of retreating to her safe room with her children, and being surrounded by terrorists. Her neighbors were incinerated in their homes. Others were hand grenaded as a family.
Her room stayed intact, and she had a 9mm handgun. Hardly enough to handle a boatload of terrorists with AKs. But many of her neighbors were outright killed, while she and her children survived. Tough lady, but she wept recounting that day.
I believe all Jews everywhere should always be armed to the teeth. Israel is loosening up, and allowing more civilian ownership. All American Jews should march down to their local gun shop and pick up ARs, shotguns, and 9mm semiautos, with LOTS of ammo. 10/7 is going to happen here, and we need to be ready.
The streets of Israel today are heavily armed. All reservists are carrying their duty weapons with full mags at the ready (empty chambers with flags). You can’t go a few blocks without seeing at least an M4.
Funny story, second hand to me. A friend was at a dance club at 2:00 a.m. On the floor was a tall long haired shapely young woman wearing a g-string red bikini that barely covered anything. 4” black stilletos. Dancing like a wild woman. With an M4 across her back.
You have a nice day.

If you suffer from low blood pressure it will work miracles for you!
By suggesting that Netanyahu be sacrificed for possible traitors within the government and/or the IDF?
You should reevaluate what it means to be a leader.
The mossed let it happen. They got what they wanted. A war of extermination...and an endless supply of money from us. Again.
“We thank you for your support!”
Everyone has an opinion, and the subject being Jewish, probably more than one each!
I knew what I was in for when posting. Israel is in a tough spot. This is just a free fire zone for everyone to vent their spleens. Someone was going to post the article, might’s well be me.
But ain’t nobody got Israel’s back more than me. We just have different opinions of what will be most successful.
Do you have any evidence of that, or did you just make it up?
Absolutely.
I enjoyed your postings on your recent service in Israel and honor you for your commitment.
I have followed Israeli events, politics and commentary very closely since Oct 7th. Israel seems to have a leftist problem like ours in the US. The disconnect with how they feel the world should be and how it is in reality is striking. Netanyahu is a realist and fights for Israel. He may not satisfy the idealists whose desires are unworkable and will lead to dire consequences but his hand on the tiller means they will continue to have a homeland.
An amazing (seeming) fact of current Israeli politics is that the left calls for the hostages to be released by having the government totally capitulate to whatever ham ass wants! That’s nuts!
ham ass will only agree that mass suicide by all the Jews on the planet is good and will save them bullets for Christians next.
So the Israeli left are total wackadoos, as far as I can tell.
My view hasn’t changed since October 7th.
Lay hands on my women and children, and you’re ALL gonna die.

There are the pro-ham-ass crowd here.
There are the turn gaza into a glass parking lot crowd here.
I think there is just the right amount of death and destruction that can be visited upon gaza to make all the grandmothers teach all the grandchildren forever that killing Jews is always a bad idea. I just don’t know how much is required. Clearly, given recent polling, the death and destruction are not nearly enough to change minds. Yet.
So BOMBS AWAY!
Not true at all. They infiltrated Ofakim, Urim base, etc. Much farther in than Nova.
Everyone interested should see Caroline Glick’s ‘Bad Strategy’! (53 minutes, names names).

The year before the attack, the judicial reform protesters included elements of Israeli intelligence and dons Air Force squadrons who were basically in mutiny. The protesters and the military who stood with them caused this neglect. Note they are using it as a weapon.
It’s filthy
Yup. We were at Hetzarim near Ofakim, iirc, and were told that the terrorists were within 2 klicks of base. We were 29 miles from Rafah.
I believe there is a strategic shift, because of the war in the Ukraine, and Russia is covertly behind a lot of these conflicts. The stakes are very high for Russia, and an easy way to make their border war go better, is to start a whole of fires elsewhere.
The time for that is after Hamas is destroyed and peace - or whatever it is in the Middle East - is restored. I don’t see any way that Netanyahu survives politically after this.
What to understand: History repeats itself.
Remember the Maine? The Lusitania? Pearl Harbor? 9/11?
And war is the health of the State.
