It is now little more than a “developing country”. Its stock market is a “junk shop” selling old tat. And its reputation as a place to do business has “never been so bad’. In the middle of the UK’s dismal election campaign, it would be easy to imagine that Britain was the country under discussion.
But Theodor Weimer, the head of the once mighty Deutsche Börse, was describing his native Germany. And he was absolutely right. After a series of catastrophic policy mistakes by centrist leaders, there is no way back for Germany – and its decline is only going to accelerate from here.
In a speech to Bavarian business leaders delivered back in April, but only made public when it was posted on YouTube this week, Weimer certainly didn’t mince his words. A country that prided itself on its efficiency, that saw itself as the engine of Europe and boasted of its formidable export machine was, as he put it, slipping to third world status.
The coalition government led by Chancellor Olaf Scholz was, he argued, a “catastrophe”, Germany was “economically on the way to becoming a developing country” and “one thing is clear: our reputation in the world has never been so bad“.

Is now a good time to point out Trump warned them against shutting down their domestic energy resources and latching on to Russia?
“policy mistakes by centrist leaders,”
Since when has Germany had a “centrist” leader? MAYBE Kohl? But even then he gave up Germany to the EU (which he helped create.)
Zero, since it was shut down "for scheduled maintenance" at the time. The Russians were driving a hard bargain. Somebody wanted that negotiation to stop.
[Spoiler: of course, I believe that "somebody" was a high-level group in the Biden Administration or in the Intelligence community, who convinced others that it would be a good idea with no tracebacks. Yes, I am open to the possibility that the Russians did it to themselves. I consider that somewhat less likely.]
It wasn’t shutdown for maintenance which is why you put it in quotes, it was shutdown.
That looks like a Russian-sponsored campaign, implemented through the Merkel government. These were not "policy mistakes". They were anti-German directions from Russia. Russians have well-founded reasons to hate Germans and they are not known for their tendencies to forgive past invasions.
The Russians still have plenty of Kompromat on all of the politicians from the former East German government and they sponsor all of the European branches of "ANTIFA". The entire "Green Energy" movement in Europe is a suicidal endeavor backed by Russian and Chinese agents. It has been quite successful at its true goal, which is deindustrialization of Europe.
To be sure, they have plenty of useful idiots in the native European population. There are all these Leftist minions who confidently believe they will be the ones who get the swag paid for by somebody else. Or they simply enjoy having power over lesser people. That is the dynamic that drives suicidal political movements.
Meltdown? Nah, that can’t happen after Angela shut down all he Nukes. I hear sales of kerosene lamp oil are up?
The poliical elites of Germany and France created and bought into cultural suicide for their own countries, as well as the economically catastrophic “green” agendas. If they each get another Hitler it would not be a giant surprise, as all the elite institutions have so discredited themselves and unlike the U.S. the populist movements are nowhere near 50%+ of the population. Things will go downhill more first.
Where does the WEF fit into your analysis of things?
Fat ass Frau Merkel was unavailable for comment.
“I don’t think their present state compares with their state at the end of WWII, when the entire country was demolished by bombing and all their factories were carted off to Russia, along with anything else on wheels.”
The dynamic for the neurotic, doom and gloom old goats on FR requires that everything is worse than before, that the world is on the edge of apocalypse and that nothing can be done. This allows them to exercise the surrender monkey ceremony of running around in circles like chickens with their heads cut off.
That's the kookiest thing I've read in while. Merkel is long gone and there's nothing preventing the current government from turning the nuclear power plants back on...or resuming Nord-2 for that matter.
He should be done with that proctology degree by now, a full on expert as opposed to the mere dabbler that he was before.
Heh... ass dabbler... I’ll have to write that one down.
Wow! That's a strong statement!
Except that the bureaucrats appointed to the Merkel government are mostly still there. And they still are implementing the suicidal energy policies promoted by her government.
It is hard to change the directions of bureaucratic organizations. Only wholesale firings will do that quickly.
You are correct, however in your notion that "there is nothing preventing the current government from turning the nuclear power plants back on...".
There are certainly no technical reasons that would prevent that. Only political inertia. Perhaps starving and freezing in the dark can change the direction of Germany. Of course, any leaders who try that will be called "NAZIs" by the Russians and the Leftist allies will all join in the chorus. The Russians have kompromat on many of the current politicians in Germany. They might be able to keep them down.
We are seeing an updated and much more sophisticated version of the Morgenthau Plan in action.
Diversity and illegal aliens are destroying america and yurp.
Importing people who hate you and go on welfare does not strengthen a country
It is a recruitment and morale-boosting organization.
Davos is a kind of fun place for billionaires and the uber-minions to go and party. It is a great place for prospective minion recruits to attend mixers and meet the uber-minions who might end up being their new bosses. There are also plenty of useful camp followers who give speeches and run sessions on "issues of greatest importance". Somebody is needed to tell the public what the sponsors want the public to hear.
The WEF is also a great place to "discuss" policies on which the billionaires have already reach tentative agreements elsewhere. The more astute of the faction leaders watch the public reaction in order to gauge how cooperative people will be to their decisions. It is not that they care what people think. They want to know how hard people will resist.
The most critical function of the WEF is to identify and recruit candidates who will follow the directions of the billionaire cartels and then to provide resources to get those candidates into government executive positions.
Postwar Germany had a lot of financial and practical aid from the Marshall Plan. Also, the Germans still had enough of a work ethic to rebuild and create in West Germany during 1949-1956 an "economic miracle." Even East Germany had the highest standard of living among the Communist Bloc.
Do Germans today still have that work ethic? I don't know. But they seem to have been ravaged by liberalism, let alone Islam.
Yes they do. They have the largest economy in the E.U.
The U.S. is a harsh master. The plan is to de-industrialize Europe and have them be completely dependent on the U.S. taking away their energy options is a big part of that strategy. Did you notice how quickly the U.S. jumped in to supply Germany with more expensive U.S.-sourced LNG?
