George H.W. Bush at 100: The last WASP president
The Hill ^ | 06/12/2024 | ELIOT WILSON

Posted on 06/12/2024 7:25:57 AM PDT by ChicagoConservative27

Today marks the centenary of the birth of George Herbert Walker Bush, 41st president of the United States. With one exception — his eldest son in 2004 — he is the last Republican presidential candidate to win the popular vote.

He was a remarkable man in many ways, having been decorated as a U.S. Navy pilot during World War II, and his resume before the presidency was broad. After becoming a successful oil executive, he was a two-term congressman, unsuccessful candidate for the Senate, ambassador to the United Nations and to China, chairman of the Republican National Committee and director of the Central Intelligence Agency.

Bush seems now a figure of a truly bygone age. He was a relatively low-key vice president to Ronald Reagan by choice rather than imposition, learning from his Democratic predecessor Walter Mondale that being effective as VP in Washington owed a lot to avoiding conflict with White House staff and cabinet secretaries. He was also aware that the previous Republican vice president, Nelson Rockefeller, had become mired in disputes with other members of the administration by trying to insert himself into the decision-making process.

Reagan’s worst mistake.

What an evil man, and a serial groper to boot.

Then we got stuck with his MORON son, who was SO bad that the country elected a black muslim non-NBC marxist to change course.

Why is he the last WASP POTUS? Why aren’t Clinton or Chimpy not WASPs? Why isn’t Trump considered a WASP? What kind of nonsense is that?

He was a New Englander. When the worst elements of English middle-class pretense, class consciousness and the accompanying class paranoia, are deposited in dreary New England they are joined by the racial anxiety of the most rootless and uncertainly-derived non-Gypsies any genealogist could hope to fictionalize. There is a no more self-promoting and projecting racist this side of India than a "whiter than you" New Englander. The towheaded farmer from Indiana, the freckled red head driller from Oklahoma, the blue-eyed kid who lives up the the "hollas" of western Virginia (whose family has been there for more than three hundred years) are all less white than a half-Sicilian who is also just as likely to claim the be Native American and be a member of the Pequot Nation. But if he buys one more set of Shaker furniture and maybe another unsigned water painting of apples from the local thrift story (it's found treasure, don't you know), he's sure to turn into a real white boy!

They missed Donald J. Trump. He is a Presbyterian raised in the tradition of his mom. GHW Bush was “wasp-ish” and more Skull and Bones, and don’t forget seeing eye ehhhhhhh china “hand” (crippled the entire time- remember the revolt in china- in the Square. US could have done quite a bit to slow the situation. Chi-Coms had to import rural troops to do the killing- the urban ones knew it was all bull crap.

BTW, isn’t Trump also technically a New Englander?

Which GhwB promptly reversed all of Reagan’s policies and economics, because remember when he ran against Reagan he called it “voodoo economics”. Yet another reason why this guy whose wife said Billy cokenose Clinton reminded her of her sons! (in what way, one wonders). GhwB was the kind of GOP the demonrat machine loved.. not the least of which was the wing of the derp state that thought he was great (esp. with their budget). Remember, Reagan saw the end of the Soviet Union (can’t have that— so now perpetual Russia Russia, repeated over and over by demonrats like hitlery clinton of the uniparty).

And yes- it WAS Reagan’s coattails because GhwB lied like hell what he was going to do— and then he proved it by being a one term failure.

The arragement was supposed to be Bush-Clinton-Bush-Clinton.

Obama messed up that arrangement in 2008. And Trump messed it up in 2016. It was supposed to be Jeb vs. Hillary in 2016.

In 2020 he most assuredly did- hence the massive digital ballot fraud to overcome it.

The most telling photo of several decades of bed fellow politics— the uniparty in full display, setting up Artie Bremer to try and assassinate George Wallace.

Very telling photo.

That parking meter plant run by Webb Hubbell’s pals?
You can park a lot of places with refurbished M-16s.

The Clinton-Bush connex was all see eye ehhhh coke deals for black budget playing around. Bush had Barry Seal murdered who knew all the bodies both these clowns created.

Never forget also who met with Guv. Billy Boy at Mena— Asst. AG William (cough) Barr— mouthpiece extraordinaire.

[Who would have been a better VP?]

Just about anyone else, provided the pick was media savvy. In Indiana, Quayle was a big fish in a small pond. Nationally, the guy was extremely inept at media appearances. Cringe all the way. Stuff that’s amusing at the local and statewide level (e.g. potato vs potatoe) just doesn’t have the same ring to it when you’re dealing with the next in line for the football.

In politics, you’re acting all the time. You can never turn that mask of command off. Tom Cruise can use Oprah’s couch as a trampoline without affecting his career because everyone knows he’s not really the characters he plays. Whereas Howard Dean screaming “Yearggh” once euthanized his own political career.

Are you a professional writer?

I don't make enough money from writing to live on it, so I don't like to claim to be a professional. As prone as I am to hasty misspellings, I should restrict my embarrassment to my small circle of colleagues and hide behind my editors.

WASP would be northeastern Brahmin/aristocrat. Well-represented in the White House, but not ubiquitous. The Roosevelts, the Bushes. Most presidents have been strivers, self-made men - and not necessarily in financial terms - not scions of old money.
