Trump campaign sends vetting paperwork to possible 2024 VPs — here are the notable names

The Trump campaign has begun vetting vice presidential contenders for the former president — and several notable names are on his short-list, The Post has learned.

Sens. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.), J.D. Vance (R-Ohio) and Tim Scott (R-SC) have all recently exchanged varying degrees of vetting documents with Trump’s campaign, a source familiar told The Post Wednesday.

As have Reps. Byron Donalds (R-Fla.), Elise Stefanik (R-NY), Republican North Dakota Gov. Doug Burgum and former Trump administration Housing and Urban Development Secretary Ben Carson, the source said.

...

A Trump campaign official told The Post that the 77-year-old former president has not settled on who he’ll tap to be on the ticket with him in November — or when he’ll make that decision.

...

Earlier this month, Trump indicated in an interview with News12 that his final decision on a running mate would come “probably not too much before” the start of the Republican National Convention, where he will be formally named the GOP nominee.

“...

“We have many people who would do a fantastic job,” [Trump said] ...

I don’t think the data bear’s that out. From what I’ve seen, Trump is polling roughly the same with whites as he did in 2020 or maybe slightly better. His big gains are coming from blacks and hispanics, but that shouldn’t be construed as a loss of support among whites.

Elsie has my vote. No sentimental favorites, such as Dr. Ben Carson. Dr. Carson is a wonderful man and an accomplished surgeon, but his nature and manner are those of a pensive introvert. It’s not fair, but the media and the average American don’t usually have the patience to properly communicate with such people. Tim Scott is simply a RINO who is too easily influenced by race.

Well, Kemp would bring much needed gravitas.

I think this is a misdirection.

Both Donalds and Rubio are from Florida. This is not an unsurmountable problem but it unnecessarily opens up Trump to claims of carpetbagging for whomever has to move. Also, neither of Rubio's parents were citizens when he was born.

Trump already knows about Carson, since he was Trump's Secretary of Housing and Urban Development.

Names that are not on the list but floated in the press are Vivek Ramaswamy, Glenn Youngkin, Greg Abbott, Sarah Huckabee Sanders, and Tulsi Gabbard. And then there are the names that nobody has mentioned yet.

Maybe, but she has not experience sufficient to be president.

What constitutes experience to be president? Trump didn't have the political chops nor the government chops, but, he's among the top 10 best presidents of all time.

If Biden can make it to the presidency with his very questionable experience, then, Stefanik is many times better qualified. If she can be as tough being president as she was with the university presidents, then, she's very qualified.

There is a basic reality in terms of the Presidential candidacy.

Over the years, The Presidency went from a job where the nation wanted a guy who had ideas and leadership qualities, to sort of like the slot for lead singer in Van Halen.

You can have a killer frontman like David Lee Roth, who excites and slays live and propels the band creatively, but who is a trainwreck in terms of everything else.

You can get Sammy Hagar, who is ultra competent but not terribly motivating and not your primary pick for frontman.

Then there is Gary Cherone, who is great in Extreme but lost in VH.

Trump is Diamond Dave. Bidet is Cherone. DeSantis is Sammy.

America isn’t voting for competency anymore. We are voting for the Lead Singer of America.

Parenthetically, the American People are Eddie, Michael, and Alex-a monster band that is invariant to the guy in the singer slot.

And Trump will win the Diamond Dave vote, which will be drawn to a guy who just lost a case. Bidet will now get the Gary Cherone vote.

As for Veep, it’s the same deal…we want a red meat Frontman or Frontwoman. Not a policy wonk, etc.

Stefanik has two Ivy League scalps. RINO? That’s what they said about Trump in 2015.

Make her VP, Trump wins, and she clobbers whatever jack wagon the Dems put up in 2028, like Kamala or some other loser.

I think it’s down to two choices: Glenn Youngkin or Elise Stefanik.

This is going to be another VERY close election. If possible, Trump MUST pick a VP who MIGHT deliver a key state... and, ALSO be a good candidate to be President, if needed.

I think, Youngkin is the best choice. I LIKE Stefanik. She might help with suburban women. But Youngkin is very popular in Virginia. He MIGHT be enough to flip that critical state. And, he’s been an executive, and a good one. He’d likely be a good President.

I’m not sure New York is close enough for Stafanik to make a difference. She MIGHT help in other areas. Would need to see how she polls there. I don’t think she helps outside of New York.

My money is on Glenn.

Tim Scott would be a waste.
Rubios won’t help much, and causes other problems.

Sarah Palin?

She works for me, and a few others. A black face like Dr. Ben might help with that demographic.

I won't vote for her to be one breath away from the Presidency. Same thing with Rubio, Tim Scott, and at this point Burgum, because I don't know enough about him.

Welp, she’s the only one who had the balls to call Comey on the carpet about his lying and deceiving congress, so that’s heavyweight enough for most folks.

She is also absolutely loyal to Trump, and that counts for a lot with him.

I suspect most of these names are diversions/distraction from the actual serious candidates. I suspect the actual candidates will be very private and low key vetting. Don't want to draw too much attention to them.

I am getting feedback that Dr. Carson might be a very good pick.

DJT doesn’t need to check any WOKE boxes. He needs to find the person who will energetically step into the office if he’s “ eliminated “ ( Dan Goldman’s stated fantasy ).

The Deep State needs to fear that person as much as they do Donald J. Trump.

No one on the Post’s list fills that bill, unfortunately.

The inheritor of maga, the one who takes the arrows and problems immediately because trump is a lame duck, the most important vp pick in over 60 years and nobody has a clue who it could be. Wowzer.

As I suspected, and just confirmed, all of those Congressional members mentioned in this article voted to keep FISA intact, except for Burgum because he’s Governor of North Dakota.
