Mexico's new president Claudia Sheinbaum has said she would have a "good" relationship with Donald Trump if he becomes president again.
Sheinbaum, the candidate of Mexico's current ruling party, the National Regeneration Movement (Morena), will become the country's first woman president, after winning the presidential election in a landslide. She will succeed her mentor, outgoing President Andrés Manuel López Obrador.
Asked about her thoughts on a possible Trump victory in an interview with Bloomberg News last month, Sheinbaum, Mexico's first Jewish president, said she would be able to maintain good ties regardless of who is commander-in-chief in the U.S.
"I think it will be good whether President Biden or President Trump wins," she said in Spanish. "We have very strong economic integration with the United States. We are now the principal trading partner and that requires us to have a good relationship."
"Now, I think that obviously we are always going to defend Mexicans abroad. We are not in favor of any discriminatory discourse, but there is going to be a good relationship."
Sheinbaum also recently said that her predecessor managed to get on well with Trump, despite his rhetoric about Mexican migrants.
"President López Obrador in the end had a good relationship with Trump and I don't see why we wouldn't be able to have it as well," she said, according to the BBC.

As a fun mental exercise, research what Mexico requires of, and provides for American citizens who wish to live in Mexico. Let’s put it this way, you get caught sneaking to to Mexico, you will not be put up in a hotel and given a cell phone and a Visa card.
If we care about Mexico and our own sovereignty and want to give a real gift to Mexico's new leader then this is what we should do.
I can point to some good things that "far left" AMLO did during his tenure. I CANNOT point to ANYTHING good that Mexico's first "conservative" President in 70 years, Vicente Fox, did on his watch. He did FAR more damage than AMLO, and spent most of his term constantly belittling, lecturing and seeking to undermine U.S. policy, and promoting both domestic and international "progressive" causes that no ACTUAL "conservative" would be caught dead supporting. Even in retirement, he's STILL a royal arrogant pain in the butt on Twitter. Again, far worse than any of Mexico's "left wing" politicians are.
Therefore, I'd be much more concerned if Sheinbaum were a "protégé" of Fox than AMLO.
