Epoch Times CFO Bill Guan charged in alleged $67 million global money laundering scheme

The chief financial officer of conservative global news outlet The Epoch Times was arrested and charged with leading a yearslong scheme to launder at least $67 million in illicit funds.

The alleged scheme by Weidong Guan and others involved cryptocurrency, prepaid debit cards, fraudulently obtained unemployment insurance benefits and stolen personal identification information, according to federal prosecutors.

The money laundering scheme caused tens of millions of dollars to be transferred to bank accounts linked the media company, prosecutors alleged.

The Epoch Times is not mentioned by name in the indictment. But Guan is listed as Epoch Times' CFO on the nonprofit media company's most recent tax return, filed in late 2023.

Back in the day, Epoch Times (run by Chinese dissidents of Falun Gong) was an interesting (though somewhat biased) window inside China, with some reasonably unslanted US and international coverage. You can get paper copies here in San Diego where they are based.

We get the paper and like it a lot. You’ll see subjects and stories not covered by the MSM. I’m not seeing any of the problems you are alluding to.

Perhaps the attack on the CFO of Epoch Times is a quid pro quo to the CCP, as Falun Gong is an anti-Communist organization. If we are heading into World War III, keeping China on the sidelines is incumbent if the U.S. and NATO plan to take on Russia should the Ukrainians fail. Also, Biden needs re-election funds.
