Nato has just 5% of air defences needed to protect eastern flank

Europe has only a fraction of the air defence capabilities needed to protect its eastern flank, according to Nato’s own internal calculations, laying bare the scale of the continent’s vulnerabilities.

Russia’s war against Ukraine has underscored the importance of air defence, as Kyiv begs the west for additional systems and rockets to protect its cities, troops and energy grid against daily bombing raids.

But according to people familiar with confidential defence plans drawn up last year, Nato states are able to provide less than 5 per cent of air defence capacities deemed necessary to protect its members in central and eastern Europe against a full-scale attack.

One senior Nato diplomat said the ability to defend against missiles and air strikes was “a major part of the plan to defend eastern Europe from invasion”, adding: “And right now, we don’t have that.”

Nato foreign ministers will gather in Prague on Thursday for two days of talks aimed at preparing for a summit of the alliance’s leaders in Washington in July, where beefing up European defence will be a central topic.

Some European leaders and military officials have said that Russia could have the capability to attack a Nato member state by the end of the decade.

Maybe pause on sending NATO troops into Ukraine and escalating this war.

Why not just give the Russians/Chinese the user names and passwords then they wouldn’t have to announce everything

Maybe we should drop out of NATO since Europeans do not care and don't respect us anyway. Why are we paying for their defense anyway?

If they want our aid, maybe require them to Buy American products and services when they shop outside their countries. Give us a benefit for defending them.

Here's another poor soul off to the Front.

BTW, Zelensky's presidential term ended on 5/20/24.

So what exactly is his official title?

The deafening silence from the pro-Ukrainian crowd on the topic of stealing human beings off the street and sending them to die without sufficient training is all you need to know about their values. pic.twitter.com/56LriOIDIo— ayden (@squatsons) June 1, 2024

I’m sure there will be plenty of blustering there. Better wear boots.

““a major part of the plan to defend eastern Europe from invasion”, adding: “And right now, we don’t have that.”

And yet NATO has shown no interest in at least talking with Putin about peace in Ukraine, and peace throughout Europe. Putin has made several overtures but no one responds.

If NATO keeps up their stupidity, Russia is going to kick their sorry asses and the innocent civilians will take the brunt of it.

One of the things that NATO used to rely on, but not speak of too much was the fact that in the advent of WWIIIthe Israeli Air Force would control the air and sea in the eastern half of the Mediterranean. Maybe we should try being nice to the Israelis so they would be friends.

Yeah but they need the planes to defend against Iran. Can't forget about Turkey either.

Just as during WWI and WWII we were reliant on the Royal Navy to defend the Atlantic, because we were too busy beefing up our Pacific presence after we gained Hawaii and The Philipines in the Spanish-American War.

Where have all our U.S. taxpayer dollars gone? Not to mention the fact that for many years, NATO has been lax in getting other members nations to comply with allocating the necessary 2% of their country’s gross domestic product for their own defense. Germany has been the worst, only having finally reached that goal this past February, the first time since the Cold War ended.

What is this nonsense. NATO has 3275 fighter aircraft, which is far more than the total number of aircraft operated by China and Russia combined. Where NATO is extremely deficient (and the Russians and Chinese too) is on drone defenses.
