I bought and read Gibbon's Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire. However I considered such an eventuality to be far in the distant future and could not imagine how it could happen considering America's enormous internal strength, prowess, and moral health. Today I understand perfectly.

on the other hand, I always wondered how Chinese could accept the call to disorder and chaos, and allow red guards (organized by Mao), to roam the streets, smashing-up 1000 year-old cultural relics and institutions, denounce and kill their teachers, monks, priests, opposition politicians, and even fighting themselves. They literally promised destruction - and still people followed.
Like Jake Sullivan talking two days ago about the USA killing thousands of civilians in Kosovar, Iraq, Afghanistan and Viet Nam without blikening an eye nor saying sorry that it is just a part of doing business the Chicago-way.
