US President Joe Biden has given Ukraine permission to use American-supplied weapons to strike targets in Russia, but only near the Kharkiv region, US officials say.
One told BBC News his team had been directed to ensure Ukraine was able to use US weapons for "counter-fire purposes" to "hit back at Russian forces hitting them or preparing to hit them".
Russian forces have made gains in the Kharkiv region in recent weeks after a surprise offensive in the area, close to the border with Russia.
On Friday, Ukrainian officials said three people had been killed and 16 injured in Russian shelling of a residential building in a suburb of Kharkiv city.
The US official also told the BBC: "Our policy with respect to prohibiting the use of Army Tactical Missile System [ATACMS] or long-range strikes inside of Russia has not changed.”
When asked by CBS, the BBC's US partner, whether the new policy included attacking Russian aircraft, an official said: "We’ve never told them [Ukraine] they can’t shoot down a Russian airplane over Russian soil that’s coming to attack them.”
The White House and state department had no immediate comment.
The UK earlier signalled that it was open to an easing of restrictions on how Ukraine could use weapons supplied by the West.

France, Britian and the US handle all aspects of their missiles in Ukraine. We provide our people there with the targeting data. I seriously doubt that even the pilots of the aircraft who fire these air to ground missles are actually Ukrainian.

Mission Creep! This is what happens when you give weapons to “support” a nation at war but then tell them they can’t use them as needed. If we wanted to end the war quickly then why did we tie the hands of Ukraine only to then untie them later? This was planned to get us drawn into a greater war.
Had we just given Ukraine the weapons needed and allowed them to use them...this probably would have been over by now. WIth Putin making some silly claims that he proved his point and then ending the war because he knows he couldn’t sustain a war where Russian cities are being destroyed.
Once again the democrats are going to drag us into a bigger war.

After all... Russia has no qualms or second thoughts using THEIR allies’ heavy weaponry against Ukraine... Russia is using millions of North Korean shells and missiles and tens of thousands of Iranian Kamikaze drones on Ukraine... non-stop.

Why should Russia be allowed to have allies helping them with foreign weapons and why shouldn’t Ukraine get equivalent help from its own allies?
After immense Republican pressure, the Biden administration has FINALLY authorized Ukraine to hit back on Russian firing positions.

Russia has no arguments to criticize this move because THEY are already doing it against Ukraine. Russia started it all by letting millions of North Korean shells hit Europe. And letting Israels number one enemy : IRAN destroy part of Europe as well.
