Nationwide cuts insurance for 100,000 pets, blames inflation, vet costs

Nationwide, the nation's largest pet insurer, is dropping coverage for about 100,000 pets across the country, blaming the rising costs of veterinary care and other factors that it says are threatening long-term viability and profitability of its pet insurance business.

"As pet lovers ourselves, we understand the emotions connected to the protection of our family pets. Inflation in the cost of veterinary care and other factors have led to recent underwriting changes and plan availability in some states — difficult actions that are necessary to ensure a financially sustainable future for our pet insurance line of business," the company said in a statement Wednesday.

What pet insurance? When I went to the vet it was reasonable, just for full disclosure, never again. I don't want the pain

A lot of the young women, couples are deciding pets= raising children. These people have this.
I had one tell me they spent 4 hours at the vet ER for their pet.
Anthropomorphism run amuck.

“I don’t want the pain”

I understand. We’ve endured about 10 of those situations over 30 years. Three remain, and then “never again”. I still cry for all of them.

My wife’s co-worker had a cat with feline leukemia. Spent $4,000 on treatment. Cat still died in 3 months.

I get it. We love our pets. But damn.

local Miami Florida media was hyping this last week...bemoaning the fact that “pet insurance” isn’t regulated.

Absurd.

“A lot of the young women, couples are deciding pets= raising children.”

And it’s led to something I never used to see — obituaries that list pets as family members. Here’s just one example from my local paper: “She is also survived by several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her two dogs, Bridgette and Sparks.”

And TV commercials where the cat inherits the summer cabin at the will reading.

Am I wrong in thinking it is the availability of insurance that has been a factor in rising costs?

.
This will hit everything. People who want better lives for their kids and grandkids will hopefully be smart enough to tie this to its owner - Joe Biden.

They now want Billions for Green School buses for failing schools.

Think crushing Debt payments.

Wise people will see this is about Bidenomics.

My dog just got his college loan forgiven for his foreign language studies degree.

I see lots of stories about insurance companies pulling back — home insurance, pet insurance, leaving certain states. Seems like insurance companies are desperately trying cut back in any areas that might cause them to lose money. And I’m wondering why they might be taking such a cautious approach at this point. And then I start thinking about the vaxx and the future needs for human health insurance. Maybe these companies know that the storm is coming.

Not at all. Probably similar to what is going on with the astronomical rise in the cost of college due to the easy access to loans.

In south Florida the vets’ offices have 100,000+ vehicles in the parking lot. Oddly it is the same expensive car in the lot 4 days a week. Poor puppy must be getting a lot of treatment. And gets around, too.

It’s hard to believe that this sort of thing isn’t going to start cascading. Where does the inflation spiral stop?

Inflation in the cost of veterinary care and other factors

The "other" factors are now they say dogs need about 20 different shots each year as well as blood work and other tests.
