Mother, 57, faces execution by a gunshot to the heart in Taiwan for drug smuggling - but blames her ex-husband after 15lb of cocaine and heroin is found in her suitcase

An Australian mother of five is facing the death penalty in Taiwan after she was allegedly caught with a stash of cocaine hidden in her suitcase.

Debbie Voulgaris, 57, was arrested at Taoyuan International Airport in December after the drugs were allegedly found in black plastic bags inside her luggage.

Taiwanese police allege she was carrying 15lbs of the drug, which - they say - she initially 'vehemently denied' having any knowledge of.

She later claimed her ex-husband John was behind the scheme, police say.

Ms Voulgaris's lawyer Leon Huang said it was 'essential' her ex took the stand as he was the only person who could confirm her claims.

Under Taiwan's strict legal system, capital punishment remains legal - despite repeal attempts. The death penalty can be imposed for a long list of crimes, including murder, treason, terrorism, extreme cases of rape and robbery, and drug trafficking.

Although Taiwan has studied other methods of execution, such as the lethal injection, executions are today carried out by shootings using a handgun.

Check your luggage before boarding and don’t leave your luggage unattended when going to foreign countries.

I’ve heard of cases where the person went to get something from the airport commissary and they were gone long enough to have their luggage compromised.

Oh yeah. Bringing drugs in via a freaking airport. Real genius level thinking here.

These Aussie idiots are always getting caught smuggling drugs through Asian countries with the death penalty. Then we have to hear them begging for their government to rescue them.

You’re assuming guilt here. She might not have done anything. there are people who, for sport, will do this to you.

All I can say is check your luggage before leaving the airport.

Cocaine in your suitcase isn’t “hidden”.

when we lived in HK my wife would bring back things like cake mix when she went to the US or UK because they were expensive in HK. She liked to open the box and take the bag out of the box so it would pack tighter.

I am surprised she was never arrested

My crew and I flew all over the world. We would always have someone standing by, keeping an eye on our luggage while it was being handled by someone else be it the van driver or handler or even the bellman. ALWAYS.

Did you pack your bag. Think hard before you answer that question.

I doubt that a professional dealer is going to rely on some random stranger to smuggle 15 effing pounds of hard drugs. And if her husband is setting her up then a half a pound will do

“I am surprised she was never arrested“

Geez so am I. Hell homeland security would swat her for that much “white powder”.

They do it all the time.
Some of it is done as a loss leader to use up resources of the state so they can make use of other methods.

She was quite the storyteller. I counted at least three versions of what she said. It was doubtful she will be executed.

Okay, with Hunter I’d consider the possibility that 15 pounds of cocaine really was his personal supply!

If she didn't have any knowledge of the drugs being there, how did she know her ex did it?

And is living with her ex or what? How could he get access to her suitcase to plant the drugs?

* That’s not mine!
* I’m just holding it for my husband!
* I just bought this suitcase and was in a hurry to pack.
