Canandaigua, Dundee, and Newark (Upstate NY) are ‘Pro-Housing Communities’

Governor Kathy Hochul announced that 213 municipalities in New York have launched applications to be certified as Pro-Housing Communities, with 61 already certified. This certification, part of a program initiated by Governor Hochul last year, makes municipalities eligible for up to $650 million in state discretionary funding. The Pro-Housing Communities Program acknowledges localities committed to housing growth. Six communities in the Finger Lakes – including the city of Canandaigua, and villages of Dundee and Newark received certification from the state.

Governor Hochul emphasized the importance of building safe and affordable housing. “My administration is ready to work with any community that shares our determination,” she said. New York State Homes and Community Renewal Commissioner RuthAnne Visnauskas praised the program for fostering housing development and ensuring New Yorkers can live and work in the state for generations. The full list of certified communities is available online.

This is just a way to shoehorn "Good Cause" which just passed downstate into small towns in upstate NY. Good cause, which is defacto rent control and puts the tenant in charge of whether or not to extend the lease (not the property owner) is EXTREMELY unpopular in rural upstate. Although not mentioned SPECIFICALLY, you best believe Good Cause is bundled into the "Pro Housing" certification (trojan horse).

This is a way for Hochul to appease the leftists in downstate who were disappointed she didn't blanket Good Cause for the entire state AND to sneak it in to upstate without causing alarm.

Dundee is dead. Newark is dying. And Canandaigua is taxing the middle class there into extinction.

Reads to me like Deep State wants to replace fleeing locals with migrants.

Good luck with that.

We own rentals very close to these towns. Hoping they will somewhat gentrify and reject “Good Cause” as well as more Cabrini Green style housing projects.

There won’t be private sector jobs for the people Deep State plans on moving in.

And there won’t be homes, just apartments.

If you want to see what happens to a city that has almost half its population renting, visit Elmira to the south.

About 40% of that small city’s population now rents.

The city looks like it.

And the population acts like it.

“Reads to me like Deep State wants to replace fleeing locals with migrants.”

My first thought was migrants/illegals. A good commie like Hochul will not be doing any good for the legal citizens.

Commies love to package stuff with misleading titles and the rhetoric that sells them. Like the Affordable Care Act that was not affordable and just filled with garbage.

New York State has lost an amazing 19 seats in Congress (and electoral votes) since 1950. It had 45 congressional districts in 1950. It has 26 districts as of the 2020 Census. It last had that few in 1813-1823.
