‘Ron, I love that you’re back’: Trump and DeSantis put an often personal primary fight behind them

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Donald Trump, the presumptive Republican presidential nominee, and Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis are signaling to donors that they are putting their rivalry behind them after a contentious and often personal primary fight.

DeSantis convened his allies this week in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, to press them to raise money to support Trump, making the case over a seafood and steak dinner that they need to work together to prevent Democratic President Joe Biden from winning a second term.

Trump called into the gathering to thank members of the group for their work, according to four people familiar with the matter who were not authorized to publicly discuss the private session and spoke on condition of anonymity.

In what three people present described as a warm and gracious call to the group that was heard over speakerphone, Trump praised DeSantis and the effort, saying “Ron, I love that you’re back.”

A reconciliation helps both of them. Trump is trying to make up fundraising ground against Biden while DeSantis hopes to preserve a potential future White House run for which Trump’s supporters could be key.

DeSantis endorsed Trump when he dropped out of the race and promised in a face-to-face meeting with the former president in April to work for his campaign. The 45-year-old governor, who has won two terms and pushed a longtime swing state increasingly to the right, may run for the White House again and would need the backing of Trump voters in a future Republican primary.

The meeting was the kickoff for what is expected to be a coast-to-coast fundraising effort by DeSantis allies, with upcoming events likely in Texas, California, Washington state and perhaps New York.

I wish DeSantis would have immediately commented on the ‘deadly force’ at Mar-a-Lago.

DeSantis should have simply not ran for POTUS here in 2024; he should have waited till 2028 and not angered some Trump supporters this year. We’ll have to wait and see what happens in 2028.

True, but at least he ‘saw the light’ quickly, unlike Haley.

She did long term damage to her political future, as she was hard headed and mean-spirited in her comments about Trump.

DeSantis did the right thing when he quickly dropped out, and endorsed Trump shortly thereafter.

Those angered trump supporters are completely irrelevant to anything. Should spend their mental calories on something useful

Witness the thread where some claimed DeSantis had authority over the FBI and signed off on a plot to assassinate Trump. They’re not all there.

Trump is genial in situations like this. If Haley came out strongly in support of Trump he’d even have some good things to say about her.

DeSantis is a lot better than Haley. I could support him in 2028. Haley never.

We’re only irrelevant if he becomes president without us, but it’s all good.

Two very competitive people in Trump & DeSantis, not letting the past get in the way of the future.

I like the way both are handling it.

There was a thread about Laura Loomer accusing DeSantis of okaying the use of deadly force directive the FBI was authorized to use, as if the FBI regularly coordinates with State Governors before acting

Right now what’s important is defeating Biden and not wild conspiracies and hurt feelings about Trump versus DeSantis

Yeah, that’s great thank you very much but I wouldn’t trust this guy as far as I could throw him. I hope Trump doesn’t make another mistake by picking this guy for his VP.

I say please make it be Ben

I think DeSantis has been a great governor and as practically conservative as one can be in his position. Sure wish he had some personal charisma and had held off running until 2028. He’d have been a shoe-in for the nomination then. If Trump picks him as VP he might still have a shot but I think Trump has someone else in mind.

Very much like Trump and Cruz in 2016. I despised Cruz during that time. He has become an ardent Trump Supporter. Live and learn from your mistakes.
