New York City is losing drugstores as retail theft continues to surge.
Gotham has logged 21,578 shoplifting complaints this year through May 12, up 5% from the 20,552 thefts during the same period last year.
Manhattan has seen 8,896 incidents of retail theft alone.
Crime is so rampant, national chains like Target, CVS and Walgreens are closing locations and tempering expansion plans.
Target announced at the end of last year the closure of nine stores across four states, including one in Harlem, due to theft.

At least they got Trump pinned down and locked into a court room everyday.
Build Back Better in action
Can’t blame them, but, this is what happens when people vote into office the people they do.
It is extremely difficult for democrats to not steal ……
What happens when “they” are unleashed. I would also say they are still testing the limits.
Build more prisons.
America has way too many uncivilized, insane bass turds living here thanks to the demented -resident in the White Hut.
Politicians and teachers telling them they are entitled their whole lives leads to this...
Good. Stupid should hurt
Isn’t Alvin Bragg a person to be proud of? A true Democratic hero bar none!/sarc
The CVS we have used since 1990 in Charlotte, NC closed because of theft and violence.
We quit going inside because of the crime but continue to use the drive thru. But now it’s a much longer drive to the nearest pharmacy.
Shoplifting...we’re not talking kids doing five finger discounts here. We are talking about organized gangs completely looting stores.
“...this is what happens when people vote into office the people they do.”
And yet how many make that connection? Everybody on FR certainly does, but it seems like nobody else can make that connection.
I was in our local CVS store the other day and there are lots more locked cabinets and lots more emptied store shelves. Good luck finding somebody to unlock a cabinet for you and heaven help you if you need three or four locked-up things from different parts of the store. It becomes impossible. I got some allergy over-the-counter medication and went to self check-out (another thing I hate!). Of course, the machine says they need an age check to buy the medication, so I had to wait for a person to show up which took a while.
It is SO much easier to go on Amazon, click-click-click and you are done, and the stuff is delivered the next day. The in-store shopping experience is horrible.
I sure miss the good old days when stores had plenty of help, checkers emptied your cart and efficiently rang up your items, and baggers bagged everything for you. The young men would often take your cart to your car and load your car for you, too!
This era of self-service means NO service and you have to do all the jobs that the store used to do for you. Some “service” economy. How did things get so bad?
Walgreens is replacing its little shopping carts with new ones that will not even go outside of the store entrance door.
So you can try juggling all your purchases in your very own two hands all the way to your car a block across the parking lot
Grocery store just installed auto-brakes on its shopping carts. You can get them outside the entry door just fine but then they seize up and will not budge at about halfway into the parking lot. In case you parked further on, you can lug your groceries by hand.
So far, we are happy to have good alternatives to these stores!
Record 21,000 complaints.
I see the problem right there.
Some accepting complaints.
New York, New York.
If thieves can make it there
they’ll make it any where.
Go ahead, bite The Big Apple. Don’t mind the maggots!
The people making all these complaints must be found and silenced. No more crime!
I really don’t understand the strategy.
The word is to staff and the police to just let the flash mob trash bag looters go without stopping them or chasing them in squad cars.
Then thieves believe that along with no bail and some places with a value limit in dollars before declaring it a theft and doing anything about it, they are being allowed to let ‘er rip with their plans to steal.
So individuals steal their desired amounts at will day after day.
Then store managers whine and the citizens complain that stores are closing.
