Ukraine’s top general says the situation in the northern Kharkiv region has “significantly worsened” after Russia claimed to have captured four further villages as it expanded its surprise cross-border offensive.
A Ukrainian regional official insisted Russia’s progress was not yet “significant” but admitted ground fighting in the area was spreading. Meanwhile, speaking on British television, UK Foreign Secretary David Cameron acknowledged it was an “extremely dangerous moment,” adding that Russia had effectively “invaded [Ukraine] again.”
The precise goal of Russia’s new push – which began in the early hours of Friday morning – is unclear. It may be to create a buffer zone designed to reduce Ukrainian attacks on Russian territory, or possibly even a renewed assault on the city of Kharkiv, 30 kilometers (18 miles) to the south.
Equally, it could be an attempt to draw Ukrainian forces away from other key Russian objectives further south – which was the rationale Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky offered in his Sunday evening address.
“The idea behind the attacks in Kharkiv region is to stretch our forces and undermine morale and the motivational foundations of Ukrainians’ ability to defend ourselves,” he said.

According to Global Firepower, France is not the best, nor 2nd, 3rd or 4th best in Europe. As for the strongest military in Europe, that would be Russia. Also ranked ahead of France are the UK, Turkey and Italy.
The Russians have a say in the matter. A ceasefire is not on the table. If Minsk proved nothing else, it proved that Ukrainian promises are worthless. By the time Trump gets to be president, Ukraine may have surrendered.

if you count Turkey as “Europe”, yes they are by far the biggest. But Italy and the Brits pale in comparison, quantitatively AND qualitatively. The UK has nothing like the combat power of France. Fewer tanks, arty tubes, ammo, you name it.

The French have pretty much been in quiet but continuous combat operations in Africa for decades. Italy, dream on.

The French Army pretty much dominates what we think of as Europe.
The French, UK, Italy, etc. pretty much dominate nothing in Europe. Their limited sphere of domination has been in Africa and the Middle East. The U.S./NATO militarily dominate within the western sphere of Europe. The U.S. dominates NATO.
Western European nations are relatively small, with France being large in comparison to them. In other camparison, France is smaller than Texas. Russia is twice the size of the U.S. China is about the size of the U.S. India is about half the size of the U.S. Pakistan is about the size of France and the UK combined. Turkey is about 1.4 times the size of France.
The area of Europe minus Russia is 6.3 million square kilometres or 2/3 of the US or slightly less than twice the size of India. The EU covers 4 million sq km, the U.S. is a little over 9 million sq km. Among global powers, the EU is small.
