In a solemn, pre-dawn ceremony, the flag that's been flying over Minnesota's State Capitol for decades was lowered for the last time.
Voices hushed in a crowd of more than a dozen onlookers at 5 a.m. on Saturday as the flag with Civil War-era imagery was carefully carried from the darkened Capitol rooftop to the building's front steps, where two National Guard members folded it into a tri-cornered shape and presented it to the state's Historical Society for preservation.
As the sun rose, a new official banner was hoisted on the same flagpole overlooking St. Paul, a stripped-down design featuring distinct state symbols that supporters hope all Minnesotans can identify with for at least 100 years to come.

I see the Red Star likes it. Who would have thought?
Flying over the twin cities of Mogadishu-St. Paul
What a waste of an article. I know, I know, I violated FR rules and actually read the article. Only one image of the new flag, and the image can’t be enlarged so you can see what the new (or the old one, for that matter) looks like. This is our new rulers telling us “...trust us, you’ll like it!”.
More than a dozen? Thirteen or fourteen? That's not really a crowd, is it?
The central image on both shows a white settler plowing a field in the foreground with a rifle and an ax resting on a nearby tree stump. In the background, a Native American man on horseback rides westward toward the setting sun.
I read this and thought it sounded really cool and was surprised they picked it. Then I realized this was the description of the bad old design.
“Voices hushed in a crowd of more than a dozen onlookers...”
More like a handful of sycophants.
That’s a group. Not a crowd. I guess if they were in a one bedroom apartment it might be a crowd. But at a statehouse, it is not.
The new one is a rainbow colored dildo on a red star background.
Looks like the flag of Somalia. 🇸🇴
Doing to flags what the Post Office did to stamps.
The old flag evoked history and tradition. But the modernists find history and tradition to be problematic.
The new flag evokes graphic arts, and not very good graphic arts. I’m surprised they didn’t go all the way to an emoji.
And it represents the new voters living in Minnesota who are from Mogadishu.
Today’s the day! Tim and I are excited to see the new Minnesota flag displayed across our state. pic.twitter.com/q4feaStDE3— Ilhan Omar (@IlhanMN) May 11, 2024

Does the new one show tents, grocery carts full of rags and people pooping/shooting up drugs?
From a flag denoting the origin of the state, to one that is meaningly less to all who see it.
New Minnesota flag, meet the flag of Somalia. pic.twitter.com/jIPZsvmFJO— The Sarcasticat (@TheSarcasticist) May 11, 2024
