Dutch riot police broke up a pro-Palestinian protest at the University of Amsterdam (UvA) on Wednesday, battling demonstrators who had vowed to stay put until the institution severed all ties with Israel.
Protesters on barricades made of desks, fences, wooden pallets and bricks used fire extinguishers to keep the police at bay, images on the local TV station AT5 showed.
Police hit protesters with batons and used a shovel to knock down the barricades, breaking through in a matter of minutes.
Hundreds of protesters on the narrow streets outside shouted "Shame on you!" as the police pushed them away from the campus site and dragged many protesters away.
The police had detained 169 people early on Tuesday after sometimes violent clashes as they cleared a similar protest at another UvA site.
Students in the Dutch capital have joined a wave of sit-ins and other actions at universities throughout Europe against Israel's war in Gaza, following larger-scale disturbances at US universities.
UvA managers had hoped talks on Wednesday would bring an end to the protests, but the students dug in, pulling up bricks from the streets and pavements near to the 19th-century campus and forming human chains to take them to the barricade.
The protesters say the Israeli institutions that the university works with profit from oppression of Palestinians.
In Amsterdam, UvA management said on Monday it had exchange programmes with three universities in Israel, which are halted because of security concerns, and was cooperating with Israeli scientists or companies in eight different European research projects. It said none of those partnerships were in support of military goals; the statement did not mention the Israeli-occupied Palestinian territories.
Hundreds of protesters also gathered on Wednesday afternoon outside the university of Utrecht, about 45 kilometres (28 miles) southeast of Amsterdam. On Tuesday, police dispersed protests at the Swiss University of Zurich and at the courtyard of the Freie Universitaet Berlin.
Last week, police took similar action at the Sorbonne University in Paris, while on Wednesday the Brussels University said it would file a police complaint against students who were allegedly involved in a violent protest, including an assault on the Jewish students union leader.

The euroweenie countries are terrible in regards to their citizens personal freedom but their police don’t screw around when it comes to unruly protesters. This is in stark contrast in our own lib cities where police are usually standing down letting pro-pali protesters harassing Jewish students and passerby.
That is kid glove treatment when you're dealing with terrorists.

Perhaps the police should just surround these idiots and just let them starve. It might be fun to watch them suffer from their own actions.
Use your night sticks, officers! If they refuse to more, crack some heads.
Btw, aiming fire extinguisher exhaust at officers is an offensive attack and should be dealt with harshly.
