Americans Are Driving Their Cars To Death In Order To Save Money

Here at Jalopnik, we know there’s nothing wrong with keeping a beloved old beater running for mile after mile, and we regularly celebrate high mileage heroes. Now, it turns out the rest of America is catching onto this way of thinking as the savings of holding onto an old car for longer begin mounting up.

Drivers across the country are increasingly holding onto their cars for longer than ever, with an increasing number hitting more than 100,000 miles in their cars, according to a new report from the Wall Street Journal. The trend comes as drivers realize the savings to be had by simply not replacing their car every five years. As the site explains:

Every neighbor I have had probably had, at least, 3 new cars per driver in the 10 years I have been in this house.

My guess is your neighbors are leasing their cars.

I’ve had 4 Grand Caravans. Between them they went 700K. I still have a 2005, and it has only 160K on it, if you treat them right they last forever. A big plus is, they worked great for my painting business. Comfort and room for equipment. You simply do not need expensive pickups or cargo vans. The write off is not worth the value.

My wife has a 06 Saturn Vue with the V-6. That thing runs like a raped ape. It has 190K on it.

No, I am talking about the SUV. I had no idea they used the name twice.

Yeah lately there been recycling names. The new Dodge Dart is nothing like the 70’s Dart. In the 80’s they used Challenger which was like a Toyota Corolla sized car.

Glad to hear that. I was hoping my boss would buy a new 2024 Dodge Caravan and it would outlive her

Exactly! A friend has a mint 1988 Lincoln Town Car, leather, vinyl half top, 18 feet long, cruise control, 5 liter Michigan made engine and entire vehicle. Gas? sure— but out cruises any... any EV and has long outlived it’s projected use life. Through maintenance, by this former NASCAR master mechanic (oil, lube, tranny, brakes, RWD differential change out lube). Radio replaced with new tech, connected to JBL system original inside. A touring vehicle that is a tank in truth. Loves driving by the EV charging stations that take forever and give limited range. Could get 10K for it- if wanted to sell it. Behemoth.

See Scotty Kilmer on Toyota’s made in Japan. 250K and beyond achievable with textbook maintenance. Toyota is more profitable than Tesla as recently publicized. Work ethic. The post war Demings excellence still existed in that culture. Not every company in Japan, but Toyota for certain.

I don’t want a keyless car. I don’t want a car that drives itself. I am an intelligent person who knows how to drive defensively and safely. I don’t want a kill switch on MY car. It’s bad enough to be tracked by dang toll transponder because no more cash. I will keep personal control of whatever I can in my life as long as I can

I don’t recall ever seen one on the road myself. But having had a 1968 Dodge Aspen, I did a double take when I saw mention of a Chrysler Aspen. It didn’t last too long and I don’t think very many were sold.

We have a 2006 Odyssey. I replaced the sliding door rollers myself. Next on the list is the front axles and control arms as it makes a racket going over bumps. That will be a bit more of a challenge for me but I think I can handle it. It hasn’t been problem free - but has done pretty well over the years.

I have a newer truck that I save for work, but just driving around town I use a 1997 Buick LeSabre. My son’s girlfriend borrowed it for the day. Dropped it back off and said “that’s a really sweet ride!”.

what is with people?....one keeps things...one reuses things...one fixes things....

such a throw away society...

like so many consider marriage....

we keep our cars as long as we can....would have kept our rav 2015 but it got totaled by a guy running into us at a stop sign...

so we got another Rav and intend to keep it for many, many yrs..

They aren't even in earth tones. Even the tan/brown cars are gone.

They are black, white and gray/silver. The cubs have made a game of it. Only cars in other colors count. We will have been driving for a couple of hours and they will have perhaps 30 "other".

But that is the story with just about everything. Buildings, cars, clothes, appliances, furniture. Almost no warm or bright tones. Gloomy, gray and depressing.

Black cars look better in the shade.
