MOUNT HOREB, WI -- An active shooter threat led to schools in the Mount Horeb Area School District to implement a full lockdown Wednesday.
According to the Mount Horeb Area School District, the threat was neutralized outside the middle school.
Authorities said without giving details that the "alleged assailant" was harmed, and a witness said she had heard gunshots and saw dozens of children running.
Shannon Hurd, 44, and her former husband, Nathian Hurd, 39, sat in a car waiting to be reunited with their 13-year-old son, Noah, who was still in the locked-down school.
Shannon Hurd said she was alerted to the incident by a text from Noah saying he loved her. She said she nearly fell down the stairs at her work as she ran to get to the school.
“I just want my kid,” she said. “They’re supposed to be safe at school, in Mount Horeb of all places.”
Heidy Lange, owner of Firefly Events Decor & Flowers, said she was in her florist shop about two blocks from the middle school when she looked out and saw kids running and “probably 50 cop cars from everywhere.”
“All of a sudden there was a whole bunch of parents running behind them," Lange said. “All our phones were beeping with all the alerts. It would devastate the town if something happened to a child here.”
Jeanne Keller was in her shop The Quilting Jeanne located down the block from the campus that includes the middle school and another school building when she heard about five gunshots.
“It was maybe like pow-pow-pow-pow,” Keller told The Associated Press by phone. “I thought it was fireworks. I went outside and saw all the children running ... I probably saw 200 children.”
Dane County Executive Joe Parisi released the following statement on the incident.
"May 1st, 2024 will be a date not forgotten. Moments like this turn lives upside down, cause trauma, sorrow, and a moment of reflection for all of us. To the young people, their families and educators, no words can say enough of how much we as a community are here for you and grieve with you. Dane County is a close knit community. We are here for you and will continue to be. To our first responders, thank you for once again stepping forward to help in another moment of critical need. Let’s all take a moment today to hug our kids and come together to help Mount Horeb heal."

Remember.
May 1 is a Communist Holiday. “May Day”
It began in 1889.
“You can lay every one of these incidents at the feet of social media influences on kids.”
There’s also the psychotropic drugs generously handed out, and sex denying hormones that really do a number on adolescents.
May God help the coppers on their journey out of the seventh circle of Hell.
Some never make it all the way home after such an ordeal.
Enjoy it today. Because tomorrow will be worse. The wet backs they have hidden haven’t been armed and released to prey upon the population yet. But when the time is right, they will be.
"Thanks, Traitors!" covers them all.
So we can strongly assume either black, illegal, Muslim or LQBTQRSTUV+-× since they have not said anything about the “ shooter”
Demographics. My money is on a messed up white kid.
Waiting for the release of the tranny mannyfesto.
Its so sad that they had to take a youngster like him down.I reckon thats just the way things are, its the wild West all over again.
Is this the fault of parenting, ya think? Or is itr just bullying?
Weird.
Long past time to reopen the mental hospitals closed in the 1970s. When that happened the mass murder rate went up like a rocket.
Keep your powder dry.
Oil and exercise your firearms.
Develop keen eyes.
Stay alert.
These steps are principle for survival.
In two words, BE READY!
I consider the present time the most dangerous of my 84 years.
Please take heed.
I saw something that indicated that the kid may have been an Eastern European immigrant. Belarus maybe?
Latest update:
“MOUNT HOREB, WI — Law enforcement shot and killed an armed student outside Mount Horeb Middle School Wednesday morning, Wisconsin Attorney General Josh Kaul said.
Kaul did not provide many details about the student, but identified him as a male. Kaul said the student was unable to enter any school buildings and nobody else was hurt.
An investigation is ongoing. Kaul said that officers involved in the incident were wearing body cameras.
The incident caused Mount Horeb School District schools to go on lockdown for much of the day on Wednesday. Students finally began to be reunited with their families at around 5 p.m.
Classes in the district are canceled for Thursday, though buildings will remain open for students and staff to access counseling and other resources. A decision on Friday’s classes will be made at a later time.”
It was a pellet gun.
