BREAKING: New Jersey Congressman Donald Payne Jr. (D-NJ) Dead at 65

Rep. Donald Payne Jr. (D-N.J.) has passed away from complications after suffering a heart attack on April 6. Payne never regained consciousness after the cardiac arrest and was kept alive on a ventilator in the intensive care unit at Newark Beth Israel Medical Center. He was 65 years old.

"Tammy and I are deeply saddened by the tragic passing of our friend, and a steadfast champion for the people of New Jersey, Congressman Donald Payne, Jr.," wrote New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy in a statement released just after noon ET on Wednesday.

Payne's office originally attempted to depict the heart attack as non-life-threatening. “Congressman Donald M. Payne, Jr. suffered a cardiac episode based on complications from his diabetes during the weekend,” said a statement released by the office, which was attributed to Payne. “He was admitted to a local hospital for treatment. Currently, he is recovering in the hospital as doctors conduct routine exams to monitor and observe his improvement. The Congressman’s prognosis is good and he is expected to make a full recovery.” Payne's office originally estimated his hospital stay would last about a week.

RIP.
OK, now what’s the process for replacing him at this stage of the years election season?
Does his death help the Republican House?

Dem Gov so that would not help. It is also NJ where they changed who was on the ballot right before an election in the past. I do not see this helping unless they do not appoint someone to fill the term out.

I think you're supposed to let the body reach room temperature before you start in with political implications.

So hang on a minute....

Checking....

Okay, he's at room temp. Proceed at will....

Thanks for your insight here. I recall the Lautenberg fiasco.

I think he had been ill for several weeks and his office tried to hide it, for whatever reason. This increases the R edge to two seats; as I understand it, the D governor under extraordinary circumstances can set a special election for the seat in September which would leave the Payne seat open for the next five months.

No appointments to House. Special election or remains vacant to next regular election.

Does his death help the Republican House?

Yes. Republicans get the vote margin back from the retirement of Mike Gallagher.

Also, like with Gallagher, I think the seat will remain vacant until the general election in November.

Dem Gov so that would not help.

He's in the House, so there is no governor appointment to fill the vacancy.

Also, the vacancy is too close to the general election to call for a special election. The seat should remain vacant until November.

The reason was they wanted to pass the big bill last week. same reason Mike Gallagher waited—to vote on bills and screw with their replacement options.

This is why you don’t bet everything on a one seat majority holding for eight months.

All these guys are old, on both sides.

Yeah, but that was for a Senate seat. IIRC, House seats must be filled by elections’ the Gov does not appoint a replacement.

How does one minimize Diabetic Coronary Disease— which rapidly ends up in a Myocardial Infarction from hyperlipidemia developing into coronary lesions which break off, form a thrombus and block the coronary arteries blood flow of oxygen to the heart. Diabetics are super high on the coronary risk factor analysis and proven published studies.

In this guy’s case: 1) Male 2)over 40 3) no doubt hypertensive, 4) diet out of control- if “soul food” really out of control high fat, high carb, high sodium (blacks are sodium retentive genetically- a fact constantly overlooked culturally in that population) 5). lifestyle- drinker? Likely 6) Ignoring of early signs/symptoms. 7) blockage is gradual and because of diabetic blood chemistry, very slow to respond with collateral circulation around a compromised vessel.

All speculation but any 3 of the first 5 puts him at HIGH risk of an MI if untreated and if not treated enough— still high.
